Position Summary
James Baldwin Review (JBR), is seeking to hire an Editorial Assistant. Co-founded by Dwight A. McBride and Justin A. Joyce, JBR is a peer reviewed, Open Access journal that brings together a wide array of peer-reviewed critical and creative non-fiction on the life, writings, and legacy of James Baldwin in an interdisciplinary and international partnership with Manchester University Press.
The Editorial Assistant will work with JBR's Managing Editor and Senior Publications Editor in the Department of African and African American Studies, Justin A. Joyce, on all aspects of the journal's production process. Some research and bibliographic work should be also expected as JBR is an integral part of McBride and Joyce's research agendas.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
  • Coordinating peer review-soliciting referee reports, compiling reports for authors, etc.
  • First-read and review of submissions.
  • Citation conversion and management.
  • Securing and managing permissions.
  • Copy editing.
  • Assist with writing such as summarizing research .
  • Proofreading documents.
  • Organizing references.
  • General assistance with manuscript preparation.
  • JBR operations maintenance and streamlining.
  • Maintaining and updating JBR's social media platform.
  • Office/administrative assistance (mailing, packaging, etc) during peak times in the journal's production schedule (normally April and September each year).
  • Library research and the delivery and return of library materials.
  • Performs other duties as assigned-Primarily research for JBR, Joyce, and McBride.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Coursework or research work in American literature, African American literature, and gender and sexuality studies.
  • Coursework or exposure to James Baldwin's writings.
  • Editorial and copy editing experience highly desirable.
  • MA in related field.
  • Excellent organizational and writing skills, alongside top-notch communication skills, will also be key as much of the work involves JBR's diverse, international, and interdisciplinary partners.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Powerpoint, Excel) needed.
  • Project management is an integral part of the role, especially with peer-review.
  • Time management is crucial as much of the work involves far-off deadlines and keeping projects on track.

Required Qualifications
A minimum of a bachelor's degree, with excellent written and oral communication skills. Intermediate Word and Intermediate Excel experience is also required.

G05-H
Salary Range
$16.70 - $23.89 / Hourly
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
