Job Summary:

Oversees the planning, preparation (writing, editing and design) and distribution of tribal publications which include, but are not limited to, the twice-monthly tribal newspaper (Smoke Signals), Resource Directory, and Tribal calendar. Oversees Smoke Signals digital presence and social media platforms on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and the podcast on Speaker to ensure accuracy and appropriateness for the Tribal audience. Updates Tribal Reader Board and meets monthly with the Editorial Board to discuss the status of the Tribe's independent press.

Essential Functions:

  • Oversees development, design, writing, editing, production and distribution of a variety of informational products including: Tribe's twice-monthly newspaper (Smoke Signals), Resource Directory, the annual calendar, as well as material placed on social media platforms. Updates Tribal Reader Board on a regular basis.
  • Coordinates planning, layout and design, editing and distribution of the Tribe's twice-monthly newsletter.
  • Works with staff to generate story ideas for print, video and podcast.
  • Coordinates collection of information and the design the Annual Resource Directory.
  • Coordinates collection of information and the design of the Tribal Calendar, all photos published within and distribution/mailing of calendar.
  • Coordinates and edits publication of Tribal Council's Tilixam Wawa publications, all photos published and distribution/mailing of publication.
  • Responsible to overall program direction and supervision.
  • Provides for staff career development.
  • Prepares an annual department budget and monitors expenditures.
  • Ensures tribal policies and procedures are being carried out.
  • Provides problem resolution to correct service areas as necessary.
  • Ensures that staff uphold the Independent Tribal Press Ordinance and work within the journalistic ethics outlined by the Native American Journalist Association and Society of Professional Journalists.
  • Develops and maintains effective working relationships with local, state and national news media to help Smoke Signals remain current on the Tribe and its activities, and works to share stories written by staff so that information is disseminated to a larger audience when appropriate.
  • Attends and/or ensures Tribal press attendance at special events and public meetings including General and Tribal Council meetings and other community meetings and cultural events.
  • Handles sensitive and confidential issues of a complex and controversial nature.
  • Maintains appropriate records and interacts with Tribal Council, when needed, and the Editorial Board regarding areas of responsibility.
  • Performs a variety of other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Supervisory:

  • Ensures the hiring, training, promoting, assigning, disciplining and discharging of employees are in accordance with Tribal Law, including without limitation, the Tribal Employment Rights Ordinance (TERO).
  • Assures staff adherence to all policies and procedures, work, safety and administrative rule, Tribal Law and State Regulations.
  • Sets standards of performance, evaluates performance and ensures effective hiring and discipline of staff.
  • Serves as a mentor, as requested, for Tribal career development

Education, Experience, and Licenses:

  • Requires a BA/BS in public relations, communications, journalism, or substantially related field.
  • Requires ten (10) years of prior work experience in public relations, communications, and journalism or substantially related field.
  • Requires five (5) years of supervisory experience.
  • OR equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Driving Requirements:

  • This position may require driving.

Qualifications,Registrations, and Certifications:

  • Requires a portfolio of publications the applicant has had the primary editing responsibility over.
  • Ability to utilize software programs such as Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of InDesign (newspaper design) and Photoshop (photojournalism) essential.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others; both inside and outside of the organization.
  • Skilled in writing and basic journalistic AP style; must have a firm grasp of the English language, proper spelling, grammar, and syntax. Must have proven skill in editing other writers' material to ensure its accuracy and improve its readability.
  • Knowledge of Native American culture, tradition, and values strongly desired.
  • Requires ability to use computer, electronic scanner for photos and printer.
  • Requires ability to use a selection of cameras to produce quality photographs suitable for print media
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to Native American culture required.

Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Continually requires the ability to express or receive detailed information or important instructions through oral communication.
  • Continually requires working with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm. Requires repetitive movement of wrists, hands and/or fingers. Often requires walking or moving about to accomplish tasks.
  • Requires standing and/or sitting for sustained periods of time, raising objects from a lower to a higher position and/or moving objects horizontally.
  • Occasionally requires lifting of up to 40 pounds.
  • This position is frequently subject to inside environmental conditions which provide protection from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes, and is occasionally subject to outside environmental conditions.
  • Supports a safe work environment by performing all duties in accordance with Tribal safety policies and procedures, and Emergency Management Plan.
  • Due to the nature of the interactions with other employees and the public we serve, employees may be required to provide documentation of, or receive, certain health vaccinations.
  • May be called upon to serve as a Disaster Reservist during emergencies, or when the Tribal Emergency Operations Center is opened.
  • Local travel is occasionally required. Travel outside of the state is infrequently required.
