Summary: This position is responsible for editing, copyediting, and proofreading a variety of Test Development materials. Editors work individually and as part of a team composed of the senior managing editor, senior editors, editors, associate editors, and/or temporary and contract editors. They work with internal clients and senior editors to plan, organize, and implement work based on established priorities for all phases of the editorial production of standardized test materials in print and/or online formats, as well as technical reports, communication materials, and other documents submitted for review. They oversee and complete editing assignments based on schedules, ensuring that deadlines are met and submitted materials are accurately edited at the editing level requested. They follow appropriate editorial production processes for all assigned materials. They edit and revise submitted materials and, if requested, ensure that all submitted materials meet identified style specifications. They advise internal clients on improving the quality of materials edited and making decisions related to proposed edits.
Essential Position Responsibilities
- Reviews documents for grammar, spelling, punctuation, usage, and/or style and format specifications consistent with requested level of editing (substantive, technical/copyediting, or proofreading)
- Plans work according to established priorities and project schedules
- Provides routine feedback to update team members regarding the implementation and timelines of assigned tasks and/or projects
- Implements editorial schedules and monitors the status of schedules
- Establishes and maintains a high-level working knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) and its application to the variety of materials submitted for review
- Follows the requirements of the Standards for Psychological and Educational Testing, as required for editorial processes
- Bachelor’s degree in English or commensurate work-related experience and skills, provided the candidate has a proven record of outstanding work
- 3+ years of editing or copyediting experience and/or Test Development experience in a business setting
- Knowledge and experience in editing a wide range of materials of varying complexities in a business or academic setting
- Superior communication skills
- High level of attention to detail
- Exceptional knowledge of and appreciation for the rules of grammar and proper usage
- Working knowledge of CMOS 17
- Experience meeting production deadlines in a team environment
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, the internet, and e-mail systems
An advanced degree in English
- Teaching experience, curriculum development experience, or specialized skills in mathematics or science
