Job description

Clarkson Potter, an imprint of The Crown Publishing Group and the leading publisher of illustrated lifestyle books in the categories of Food & Drink, Design, Photography, Gift & Pop Culture, and Entertainment, is excited to hire an Editor to join our passionate team.
Application Deadline: October 22, 2023 at 11:59 PM EST
The Editor will report to and work closely with the Editorial Director of Design, Culture, and Gift on a dynamic list spanning games, decks, stationery, and other gift products as well as a few book titles a year. We encourage and expect our editors to prospect new trends and have a broad range of interests-whether in gaming, mushroom hunting, gratitude, tarot, or trends we haven't yet considered. Our process and culture require editors to work in a collaborative environment with other members of the editorial team, as well as our design, production, marketing, and publicity departments-and of course the authors themselves, whom we view as both our talent and our partners. We expect the Editor to develop a list that speaks to, and is representative of, the diversity of our potential audiences and our society as a whole. It's preferable for the candidate to be able to commit to commuting to our New York office a few days a week to collaborate closely with design and production.
The Editor will manage a list of 12 to 15 titles a year, with an emphasis on gift paper products as well as books, and will closely liaise with authors and their agents, and relevant departments throughout Crown, in performing the activities outlined below.
Specific duties include but aren't limited to:

  • Identifying consumer trends (in gift and pop culture) and recruiting authors and creatives
  • Evaluating book proposals and building the commercial and cultural cases for their acquisition, including creating profit and loss statements
  • Negotiating and managing relationships with agents
  • Developing and finalizing manuscripts, including hiring freelance writers, line editing, writing sales- and consumer-face copy, and working with our design team to develop art programs
  • Engaging and partnering with authors and licensors to fully realize their vision, collaborating throughout the acquisition and production processes
  • Collaborating with designers, art directors, and production teams
  • Representing the publisher, design, and production teams when working with the author or licensors, and representing the author or licensor when working with our publisher, design, and production teams

The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented and deadline-driven with a minimum of 5 years of editorial experience and a keen interest in gift publishing, including games, puzzles, note cards, and prompted journals, as well as illustrated non-fiction books. Self-motivated and independent, this person will contribute actively as part of a small and highly collaborative team.
The Essentials:
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong grasp of the gift marketplace and consumer trends
  • Strong interest in pop culture properties
  • Editorial experience working in product development or on full-color books (adult illustrated or children's publishing)
  • Direct experience taking multiple concurrent projects from conception to completion
  • A strong record of meeting deadlines with effective organization and prioritization skills
  • Diplomacy and sensitivity in handling delicate conversations within a collaborative environment
  • Extensive team coordination experience (such as with a licensor, writer, illustrator, and designer)

The salary range for this position is $70,000-$73,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results. To apply, please submit your cover letter and resume through our online application process.
