Description (scope of work)
IBSS is seeking a scientist to facilitate Ecosystem and Statistical Model development and application for NOAA's Ecosystem Dynamics and Assessment Branch.
Key Responsibilities:
- Coordinate and provide technical support for the development of an interdisciplinary Ecosystem and Statistical (e.g., multispecies assessment models, time-series models, structural equation models) modeling toolbox
- Collaborate broadly with NEFSC, Clients, and others as applicable to strategize and prioritize tasks
- Identify and prioritize software in need of updates and maintenance
- Update and/or work with software developers to ensure model tools meet user needs
- Provide first-line user support for Ecosystem and Statistical Model software
- Keep abreast of NO nd IT policies to ensure compliance and appropriate provision of Ecosystem and Statistical Modeling software
- Provide technical support for assessment model development and testing
- Support and contribute to the development and maintenance of Ecosystem and Statistical Modeling software
- Improve usability of Ecosystem and Statistical Modeling software, including providing more useful error messages and improving creation of input files
- Develop testing framework to benchmark existing and new Ecosystem and Statistical Modeling software
- Develop documentation guidelines for Ecosystem and Statistical Modeling software to be included in the toolbox
- Facilitate and support community use of versioning and storage for Ecosystem and Statistical Modeling software
- Ecosystem and Statistical Modeling communication and outreach
- Collaborate with and survey developers and field scientists conducting Ecosystem and Statistical assessment modeling tasks within NMFS and beyond to best meet community needs
- Develop or coordinate training on different Ecosystem and Statistical Modeling platforms
- Create and update documentation for Ecosystem and Statistical Models
- Provide reports, briefings, and presentations on Ecosystem and Statistical Models
- Communicate the results of projects and activities to general and scientific audiences in written and oral formats
- Organize and participate in symposia at national and international conferences and workshops
Required Skills /Education/ Certifications & Qualifications:
- At least four (4) years of experience (directly related to the individual requirement) with a Master's degree in statistics, marine science, fisheries, quantitative ecology, oceanography, or similar, or PhD in a similar field
- Excellent programming skills, including experience that may include C, C++, Java, Javascript, Python, and HTML
- Knowledge and/or experience with statistical software, such as R, python, SAS, MATLAB, and others
- Experience and understanding of code versioning software, such as Git, SVN, mercurial, and others
- Experience with Automatic Differential Model Builder (ADMB) and/or Template Model Builder (TMB) package is highly desirable
- Experience in linking existing oceanographic and ecological models or ecological and economic models together is highly desirable
- Demonstrated experience in the development of graphical user interfaces for scientific purposes with data analysis and familiarity with the design, development, and management of relational databases for scientific information
- Demonstrated proficiency for the following skill sets:
- Project management for complex and technical scientific programs
- Coordinating and leading diverse project teams to develop, improve, and achieve project goals
- Communication both verbally and using written materials (including visual presentations) with a variety of audiences including technical, scientific, and the general public
