Position Title:    Early Head Start Teacher

 

Reports To:        EHS Center Coordinator/Education Manager

 

Classification:   Non-Exempt

 

 

Position Summary:   

 

 

The person in this position has the day-to-day, direct and primary responsibility for children who participate in the Early Head Start project. This position is performed in accordance with the Early Head Start Performance Standards and the licensing requirements for Child Care Facilities in the state of Alabama.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • First priority is teaching the children of EHS.
  • Reports directly to the EHS Center Coordinator/Education Manager and informs him/her of all activities and problems as they arise.
  • Meets and instructs in assigned Early Head Start classroom.
  • Plans a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of the student.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students.
  • Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor or members of supervisory staff.
  • Encourages students to set and maintain appropriate developmental standards of classroom behavior.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals, and in harmony with those goals establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, and utilizes skills to communicate these objectives to students.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
  • Performs co-curricular and extracurricular activities as designated or assigned by the EHS Center Coordinator/Education Manager.
  • Implements by instruction and action the Alfred Saliba Family Services Center’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
  • Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
  • Assesses learning disabilities of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of specialists as required.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintains accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, administrative regulations of the Alfred Saliba Family Services Center, and the Head Start Revised Performance Standards.
  • Develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  • Makes provision for being available to parents for education-related purposes and parental conferences outside the instructional day when required or requested.
  • Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for volunteers.
  • Strives to maintain and improve professional competence through workshops, staff development training and in-service meetings.
  • Attends staff meetings and serves on committees as required and requested by EHS Center Coordinator/Education Manager.
  • Ensures educational advancement and growth in their students, the development of good character and desirable attitudes, protection of the student’s health and safety, protection of all equipment, supplies, and other school property, and the maintenance of discipline and good order in classes and elsewhere throughout the school buildings and grounds.
  • Will immediately inform EHS Center Coordinator/Education Manager, EHS Program Services Coordinator, EHS Project Director, ASFSC Executive Director and parents of any incident that may have injured or harmed a child.
  • Performs daily documentation on observations of children.
  • Maintains an open, friendly, and cooperative relationship with each child’s family, by encouraging their involvement in the program, promoting parent-child bonding, and nurturing parent-child relationships.
  • Promotes feelings of security and trust in infants and toddlers by being warm, supportive, and comforting, and by establishing strong and caring relationships with them.
  • Provides toddlers with experiences and opportunities that allow them to develop curiosity, initiative, problem-solving skills, and creativity, as well as a sense of self and a feeling of belonging to the group; and conduct developmental screenings of infants’ and toddlers’ motor, language, social, cognitive, perceptual, and emotional skills.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by EHS Center Coordinator or EHS Project Director.

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Employee must be at least 19 years of age, have a high school diploma or GED and have at least a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential or comparable credential, and have been trained or have equivalent coursework in early childhood development with a focus on infant and child development. (Alabama Minimum Standards F. Staff 1. b. and Head Start Standards 1302.91 (e) (1).
  • At least six months experience in a Child Care Center and/or Day Care environment.
  • Preference will be given to current or former Head Start parents or current Early Head Start parents.
  • This position is full-time.
  • This is a non-exempt position.

 

Essential Functions / Physical Requirements:

 

The requirements below are required with or without reasonable accommodations: 

  • Ability to tolerate walking, standing, and sitting throughout the day.
  • Reaching, bending, lifting, carrying, and must be able to lift minimum of 20- pounds to chin level without injury.
  • Travel, local and out of state, including overnight stay, as necessary.
  • Ability to meet the attendance requirements for the position.
