Overview:  

The Enrichment Systems Engineering Section within the Enrichment Science and Engineering Division (ESED) is seeking a Dynamic testing Technician for the Dynamic Testing (DT) Group. In this group, we are focused on research & development (R&D) of hardware and software solutions for various enrichment systems that strengthen Oak Ridge National Laboratory's leadership in isotope production and enrichment technology innovation.

 

ESED serves the nation in two critical areas: advancing enrichment technologies and exploring stable isotope production and applications. The division leverages an elite staff of scientists and engineers with the world-leading capabilities of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to deliver groundbreaking advancements with a variety of applications, from national security to life-saving medical treatments.

 

ESED is the national steward for the research, development, and demonstration of gas centrifuge technology. Furthermore, ESED continues to expand the nation's stable isotope portfolio by advancing electromagnetic isotope separation technology.  Beyond advancing current technology, the division is also exploring new ways to enrich stable and radioactive isotopes. The successful candidate will support the design, fabrication, and integration of I&C components of ESED enrichment systems to ensure ORNL meets the nation's need for these vital materials and technology.  

 

Purpose:  

Provide technical support for a variety of technical projects, programs, or operations consistent with ORNL's aspiration to be the world's premier R&D institution and ORNL's science culture. Work with DT technical staff to design, build, integrate, and commission solutions to support testing setups that are deployed for the advancement of enrichment technologies and isotope production. Establish capabilities that enable programs to excel at the forefront of technical professional expertise; work to solve technical challenges; perform work consistent with ORNL's Environment, Safety, Health, and Quality (ESH&Q) requirements, Safeguards and Security, and business rules.

 

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Work with DT technical professionals to design, develop, integrate, and commission hardware and/or software solutions for a variety of systems for dynamic characterization of components.
  • Develop and review technical documentation such as test plans, electrical wiring schematics, and operational procedures for testing equipment. 
  • Fabricate, maintain, and troubleshoot test stand equipment including electrical and mechanical components, and industrial sensor/transducer technologies. 
  • Evaluate specifications and select electrical hardware components required for the acquisition, storage and processing of high-speed data.
  • Collaborate with DT group leader, project technical leads, and other ESED/DT technical staff to establish requirements for executing work in compliance with ESED quality assurance program policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently, manage assigned tasks, efficiently execute work scope, and demonstrate competency in all relevant equipment and procedures.  
  • Demonstrate ability to collaborate across technical disciplines and cross-functional teams to develop solutions for meeting project deliverables.
  • Participate in continuous learning, professional development, training, and process improvement activites.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Associates degree in electrical/electronic technology or related technical discipline, and a minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience creating electrical drawings, schematics, BOMs using CAD software programs.
  • Capable of evaluating, selecting, and sizing electrical components for Dynamic Testing systems. 
  • Maintenance and troubleshooting experience with low-voltage control signals, AC/DC power distribution, and common industrial instrumentation and feedback control equipment. 
  • Experience using M&TE such as DMMs, function generators, and programmable power supplies.
  • Experience developing and/or executing test plans and procedures for DAC systems.
  • Self-starter, good interpersonal and communication skills, ability to work independently and on a team.
  • Demonstrated initiative and desire for continuous learning and professional development.  
  • Proven ability to efficiently meet deliverables while managing task priorities, adapting to scope changes, never compromising safe/secure operations, and maintaining a positive work culture. 
  • Ability to hold and maintain a DOE Q security clearance is required.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using AutoCAD and/or AutoCAD Electrical to develop electrical drawings and schematics.
  • Experience programming PLCs or deploying PLC programs preferably with Rockwell Automation Studio 5000 design software. 
  • Experience with Allen-Bradley industrial automation equipment and PLC product lines.  
  • Familiar with National Instruments hardware platforms such as cRIO, CDAQ, and PXI. 
  • Electrical work experience with single phase and 3-phase power systems.
  • Familiar with pneumatic systems, water cooling systems, vacuum systems, flow/pressure control systems, and/or motors/motor drives.
  • Experience conducting work activities to meet requirements of a Quality Assurance (QA) program and familiar with common Software Quality Assurance (SQA), Design Control, and Configuration Management practices.
  • Active DOE Q clearance.

 

 

Special Requirements:

 

Q Clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
