Position Summary
The Drilling Engineer handles assignments of a broad scope and moderate difficulty. Responsible for the conceptual well design and efforts to ensure that wells are designed and delivered to meet the agreed business objectives with regards to operational risks, drilling optimization, safety and cost effectiveness. May mentor less experienced engineers on fundamentals and supervising technical work is a large portion of this role. This role includes leadership positions on team and projects.
Essential Roles & Responsibilities
Plan and design the well, monitor actual drilling phase of the well with an emphasis on cost and
efficiency tracking and provide engineered solutions to real time problems as needed
Develop and design drilling programs, including casing, drill string/BHA, mud, cement, bit,
directional components
Perform well review with Drill Site Manager and Drilling Superintendent for process
optimization and continuous improvement
Prepare and document detailed drilling prognosis
Effectively communicate with well supervisors on multiple rigs
Prepare, submit and track AFE’s for drilling, ensuring daily reports are submitted accurately and
on time
Verify invoices prior to approval in Wellview to ensure accuracy
Verify that estimates reflect current cost scenarios (rig rates, permits, location, insurance, title,
etc.)
Develop and evaluate new methods for saving time and costs related to drilling programs
Conduct post well analysis to determine areas for improvement Must collaborate with asset team
members, completions, operations, land department, accounting, service companies, rig contractors, state and regulatory agencies
Promote and ensure exemplary HSE practices
Assist with training and development of entry level engineers and technical support personnel
On call support, including nights and weekends may be required for field locations
Conduct business with the highest ethical standards; demonstrate decision-making skills that
ensure the safety of all persons associated with SM facilities Other duties as assigned
Computer/Software Applications
Proficient level of skill in Microsoft Office. Experience with Wellview, Spotfire, Power BI, and other commonly used industry software. Technical skills that allow easy adaptation to company specific software and other necessary related applications. (Landmark - Compass, Stress Check, Torque & Drag).
Role-Specific Technical Knowledge & Skills
Experience in Drilling operations, planning and operational implementation. Competent ability to drill horizontal wells. Ability to identify and produce strategic economic recommendations/results. Technical knowledge and operations experience in horizontal well Drilling Engineering. Technical knowledge and operational experience with mud motors and directional tools in horizontal wells. Identifies technology needs and opportunities to reduce cost and increase efficiencies.
Typical Education
Bachelor’s in Engineering required; Bachelor's Petroleum Engineering preferred
Typical Experience
Minimum of 6 years of applicable experience
