Job Summary and Description:
Distribution utilities across the globe are undergoing efforts related to grid modernization and DER integration which represents a significant transformation of the distribution system. The modernization of Distribution Operations in particular plays a critical role in ensuring a successful transition to the future with improved reliability, resiliency, and resource utilization.
The EPRI Distribution Operations and Planning team leads research to advance the processes, tools, technology and workforce required for a modern distribution system. The research program is broad, with researchers working on topics across planning, operations, protection, and analytics.
This position performs distribution system modeling, simulation, and analysis across a range of topics to advance the distribution system. This position supports the development of new algorithms, software solutions, and tools to enable modernization.
Research areas include:
  • Identifying, integrating, and deploying least-cost solutions
  • Integrating DER into planning and operations
  • Designing non-wires alternatives solutions
  • Performing wide-area distribution studies for hosting capacity, electrification, decarbonization
  • Advancing distribution management algorithms and control systems
  • Developing resilience and reliability planning methods
  • Developing tools to support operator analytics to locate and utilize grid modernization technologies
  • Developing methods to leverage new data to improve system models
  • Modeling transmission and distribution coordination

Preferred Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field or equivalent experience required.
  • Preferred MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering with Power System emphasis
  • Must have satisfied requirements of entry level engineer/scientist and have 2-3 years of engineering experience or comparable work/educational experience required.
  • Requires the ability to communicate effectively with customers and staff, both verbally and in writing.
  • Self motivated and able to work effectively as part of a team

Ideal candidate:
  • Knowledge of power system fundamentals, specifically distribution systems
    Experience with software coding (Python, Delphi, Java, etc.)
  • Extensive experience conducting power systems analytical studies, with an emphasis on distribution modeling and simulation.
    Experience with OpenDSS, CYME, Synergi, Milsoft and other industry simulation packages prefered.
  • Modeling of distribution systems/networks, as well as DER (wind, solar, and electric vehicles) for high-penetration analysis
  • Knowledge or experience with big data analytics and management a plus
  • Must be able to exercise judgment, diligence, and attention to detail and demonstrate an aptitude for carrying out responsible technical assignments
  • Interest to support diverse projects that involve modeling, simulation, and analytics supporting both planning and operations

The salary range for this position is $79,815 USD to $107,985 USD annually.
This salary range is an estimate, and the actual salary may vary based on various factors, including without limitation applicant's education, experience, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. The salary may also be adjusted based on applicant's geographic location.
This role is eligible to participate in EPRI's annual incentive program. The amount of incentive varies and is subject to the terms and conditions of the plan.
This role is eligible to participate in EPRI's standard employee benefit programs, which currently include the following: medical, dental, vision, 401k, STD/LTD and paid family leave, life and accident insurance, paid time off (flexible vacation, sick leave, and holiday pay).
