Location: Student Transportation, Omaha Public Schools, 3833 North 72 Street, Omaha, NE 68134

Reports To: Director of Student Transportation

Work Schedule/FLSA Status: 202 duty days/10-month/Non-exempt

Duty Hours: 7 hours per day

Salary Schedule: Sal Plan T16, Sal Grade 83C

Position Purpose:

Manages assigned routes for efficient, effective, and economical operation and in accordance with district policies, procedures and practices. Communicates via telephone, two way radio, and through electronic messages to others in order to provide Transportation Services to students, families and schools in a professional businesslike manner.

Essential Performance Responsibilities:

• Arranges for substitute bus/van drivers.
• Response to requests for special pickups.
• Verification of destination and appropriate adult notification.
• Meets regular and predictable attendance requirements.
• Assigns drivers needed for extra routes.
• Responds to non-scheduled transportation requests.
• Provides for transportation services when required by students at other than scheduled times.
• Verifies notification of a responsible adult in instances of unscheduled drop-off times.
• Works with distractions and meets urgent time deadlines.
• Exercises general responsibility for job-related decisions.

Additional Duties Performs other related tasks as assigned by supervisory personnel.

Equipment: This position may require the ability to use basic office equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, and fax machine. Must always comply with OPS’s guidelines for equipment use.

Travel: Not required

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards:

• Must be able to respond rapidly in emergency situations.
• Ability to sit for periods of more than one hour.
• Must be able to work in fast-paced environment.
• Must have organization, time management, communication, and interpersonal skills
• Work in transportation environment.

Interrelations:

• Contact with personnel within the district and with customers and vendors.
• Will be working under the direct supervision of the department supervisor in order to complete day to day tasks.
• Will be working with a diverse population requiring the ability to handle all situations with tact and diplomacy.
• Must understand and respond appropriately to customer needs and maintain a positive attitude with all customers and colleagues.
• Expected to interact with all internal and external customers in a friendly, professional manner and provide quick, responsive customer service.

Employee Punctuality and Appearance

• In order for schools to operate effectively, employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has received approved leave.
• Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employee’s supervisor or building administrator.
• All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of Omaha Public Schools and is appropriate for their position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• A high school diploma and/or equivalent.
• A valid driver's license.
• Previous experience as a bus/van driver, supervisor or dispatcher, preferred.
• A satisfactory attendance and work record.
• Ability to read and interpret written quantitative sources of job information.
• Ability to receive and process verbal job-related information.
• Ability to give and receive both routine and non-routine job information accurately.
• Skills with telephone communication and accurate message transcription.
• A knowledge of the community, building locations, District responsibilities and safety procedures.
