Your Opportunity
Clear, simply worded, easy-to-understand and risk-based policies and standards are fundamental to effective risk management. Schwab seeks a compliance professional to lead Schwab Compliance's enterprise-wide approach to effective risk mitigation through clear, simply worded, easy-to-understand and risk-based policies and standards. The successful leader will embrace an enterprise view and Schwab's challenger mindset in influencing the design, evolution and content of Schwab's Compliance Policies and standards architecture, consistent with Schwab's compliance risk management policy and its enterprise risk management framework. The successful candidate will recognize the true enterprise-wide nature of this role and own the companywide compliance risk management strategy for this area, partnering with colleagues in the second line and across the firm on the substance of Schwab's Compliance Policies and standards, training and communications, monitoring and testing, and reporting. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to build strong working relationships with their first-, second-, and third-line partners. The successful leader will be supported by, and responsible for, leading and developing a strong team with the diverse skill sets necessary to ensure effective policy and standards risk management.
The successful candidate will be a part of the leadership team of, and report to, the Director, Schwab Compliance - Policies & Training.
Each Director in Schwab Compliance helps realize the strategic direction of the companywide compliance risk management program. Each Director is assigned leadership responsibility for specific functions and programs and specific strategic and program objectives, and shares the same measures of success:
  • Personal ownership of their assigned compliance risk management responsibilities as team lead and shared accountability for the successful execution of the Schwab compliance risk management program.
  • Vivid day-to-day evidence of enterprise-wide thinking, bringing the full Schwab Compliance perspective to every aspect of the job, including exceptional collaboration and cooperation with Schwab Compliance peers, demonstrating the lived values of #OneSchwab and #OneSchwabCompliance.
  • Demonstrated success attracting, retaining, empowering, and developing a diverse group of employees with the skillsets and expertise to identify, measure and manage Schwab's compliance risk effectively.
Enterprise-wide thinking is an approach that considers the entire organization, rather than an individual business or entity. It involves the holistic view of regulatory impact and business strategies. Collaboration, open communication, and alignment across teams are drivers for success. Enterprise-wide thinking means taking a big picture view.
Each Director in Schwab Compliance engages with key stakeholders and leaders at all levels across Schwab, and is responsible for Schwab Compliance's engagement with specific key stakeholders based on their assigned business support responsibilities.
The specific requirements for this role are as follows:
  • Owning and leading the strategic evolution of Schwab Compliance's policy and standards architecture.
  • Leading the development and execution of a risk-based Schwab Compliance policy and standards prioritization plan.
  • Driving continuous improvement of the readability and effectiveness of Schwab Compliance's policies and standards.
  • Identifying opportunities and influencing second- and first-line stakeholders to meaningfully advance policy and standards socialization, impact assessment, and implementation processes.
  • Leading a team responsible for creation and maintenance of Schwab Compliance policies and standards.
  • Establishing best practices and driving consistency across Schwab Compliance policies and standards through development of team procedures, job aids, and/or templates.
  • Leading, attracting, developing, and empowering a team with the diverse skillsets and expertise to identify, measure and manage risk effectively.
  • Collaborating and coordinating with peers across Schwab Compliance, other Corporate Risk Management colleagues, and first line of defense business partners.
  • Engaging with industry peers, industry groups, and regulators to ensure regulatory requirements and expectations are addressed, including implementation of new and enhanced rules.
  • Developing appropriate metrics and other reporting to senior Compliance leaders and risk committees.
  • Actively participating in various working groups and effectively challenging business partners when appropriate.
  • Carrying out other duties as assigned, including project work.
What you have
  • 10+ years industry experience including demonstrated leadership experience, with a minimum of 5 years developing Compliance policies/standards at a broker-dealer, registered investment adviser, and/or banking institution; experience with all three a plus.
  • Strong regulatory knowledge of broker-dealer, advisory, bank, futures, consumer protection, and other regulatory standards.
  • Demonstrated success in building efficient and successful teams to be highly collaborative and influential while building strong internal and external partnerships and providing effective challenge and guidance to varied stakeholders.
  • Relationship-oriented leader who manages complex, multistakeholder issues with resilience, embraces others' perspectives and understands the limits of their own points of view.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and proven ability to manage multiple, competing initiatives simultaneously.
  • Strong executive presence and excellent interpersonal, relationship building, and change management skills.
  • Persuasive communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to deliver verbal and written communications that are clear, concise, and impactful with their intended audience.
  • Strategic thinker who can anticipate the implications and consequences of situations and take appropriate action to be prepared for possible contingencies.
  • Ability to think creatively to streamline or reimagine existing processes and influence to drive a vision while being mindful of stakeholders' needs and requirements.
  • Provides a clear, independent risk management perspective in accordance with the Board-approved risk appetite.
  • Client focused; able to build relationships and establish trust, respect, competence, and confidence effectively and quickly.
  • Ability to lead a dynamic team and motivate direct and indirect reports to excel.
  • A degree or equivalent experience is required; post-secondary degree (e.g., JD, MBA or equivalent) viewed favorably.
