The department of OHSC has an exciting opportunity for a Director, Radiation Control to work at the UHealth Campus.
The Director, Radiation Control serves as the Executive Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), and Chief Imaging Physicist for the University of Miami, UHealth, the Public Health Trust, and as department administrator. This is an extensive leadership role that encompasses serving as the RSO for Florida Radioactive Materials Licenses 1319-1,1319-2, 1319-3, 76-13, 3908-1, 3908-2, 3908-4, supervising personnel exposure and ALARA program for the institutions, and oversight of an extensive Imaging Medical Physics program which includes Nuclear Medicine. The clinical RSO duties include High and Low Dose-Rate Brachytherapy, GammaKnife, Proton Therapy cyclotron byproducts and Nuclear Medicine. The RSO also oversees the use of radiation and personnel exposure at the academic centers, including basic sciences research. Systems wide the Imaging Physics program oversees over 30 CTs, 21 Mammography (Hologic), over 150 Fluoroscopy, approximately 300 Ultrasound units and transducers and a large number of radiographic tubes.
  • Reviews all proposals for the use of radioactive materials under State of Florida Radioactive Materials License (currently 76-13) issued to the University and recommends action to the Non-Human Use Radiation Safety Committee.

  • Reviews plans for new and renovated research space under the Non-Human Use license to assure that the design is suitable for proposed use of radioactive materials or radiation producing devices.
  • Oversees quality control and use of three (3) isotope-based irradiators.
  • Performs shielding design, calculations and post shielding assessments for all imaging modalities including PET.
  • Reviews all Human Subjects Research Protocols involving the use of ionizing radiation or radioactive materials. Is authorized to grant interim approval by the Human Use Radiation Safety Committee and recommends final action to that Committee.
  • Drafts comments as appropriate for various University officers, administrators, and faculty regarding pending legislation or regulations regarding radiation issues.
  • Directly supervises all Medical Physicists of the Center as well as the Office Manager of the RCC.
  • Maintains State of Florida licensure and performs the functions of a Medical Physicist as necessary to meet the workload of the RCC.
  • Periodic review of personnel dosimetry.
  • Set up MRI safety policies including policies dealing with scanning of MR safe/MR conditional devices.
  • Medical Physics testing of all imaging modalities in support of ACR accreditation, TJC accreditation and state requirements.
  • Identification, disposal, and surveys of radioactive waste
  • Lead in policy development for Mass Casualty situations from Radiological 'dirty bomb' or Nuclear detonation.
  • Participates in radionuclide-based therapies and patient specific dosimetry.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree Required. Ph.D. Degree preferred
  • Minimum 5 year of relevant experience.
  • Qualifies to be Radiation Safety Office for Broad Scope Radioactive Materials License with GammaKnife™ and High Dose-Rate Brachytherapy. Qualifies under ACR criteria to perform modality testing for accreditation. Ability to supervise Florida Medical Physicist in Training licenses.

Certification and Licensing requirement(s):
  • American Board of Radiology in Diagnostic Medical Physics. American Board of Radiology in Radiological Physics.
  • American Board of Radiology in Medical Physics.
  • American Board of Medical Physics in Diagnostic Medical Physics. American Board of Medical Physics in Nuclear Medical Physics.
  • American Board of Science in Nuclear Medicine in Nuclear Medicine Physics and Instrumentation. Full Florida Medical Physics License - Diagnostic Medical Physicist or Nuclear Medicine Physicist.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:
  • In-depth understanding of radiation safety in a research and medical setting.
  • Understanding of Radiation Safety, Radiological Imaging Physics, MRI Physics, MR safety and Nuclear Medicine Physics.
  • Ability to serve as MRI Safety Expert.
  • Proven ability to independently perform Diagnostic Medical Physics testing.
  • Ability to perform patient dose estimates, fetal dose estimates and peak skin dose estimates in fluoroscopy.
  • Ability to serve as Florida license supervisor for junior physics staff and oversee work from physics assistants.
  • Ability and willingness to serve as mentor to junior Physicist, Physics Assistants and graduate students.
  • Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
  • Familiarity with radiation detection instruments and functionality.
  • Knowledge of units of radiation and radioactive materials.
  • Knowledge of Florida regulations regarding the use of radioactive materials and radiation- producing devices.
  • Capable to acting as RSO and lead in decontamination following Multiple Casualty Incidents/Nuclear detonation.
  • Ability to review research protocols for appropriate use of radiation on Human subjects.
  • Ability to review research protocols for appropriate use of radiation on Animal subjects.
  • Familiar with personnel exposure limits and ALARA concepts.
  • Ability to perform shielding calculations for all imaging modalities including Radiography, Fluoroscopy, Computed Tomography and Positron Emission Tomography
  • Proficiency in computer software (i.e. MS Suite).
  • Elementary knowledge of low-level computer language (i.e. C/C++).
