We are a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering a more accountable and trustworthy marketplace. As the foremost thought leader on industry self-regulation, we are shaping the way that businesses and consumers interact with one another. We are the home to more than a dozen self-regulation programs that set high standards for businesses and provide third-party accountability and dispute resolution services that help ensure a fair marketplace for consumers. BBB National Programs has worked with industry leaders and government regulatory agencies since 1971 to establish the standards that guide best practices in advertising, privacy, children's and teen's marketing, consumer warranty issues, and dispute resolution.

ABOUT OUR PRIVACY INITIATIVES

BBB National Programs works with individual companies, industry groups, and regulators to develop, monitor, and enforce robust privacy standards. Our trusted privacy programs deliver independent accountability for privacy commitments, whether built on self-regulatory principles or legal requirements, tailored to respond to the unique privacy challenges presented by specific data types, like children's data, or use cases, such as emerging technologies and cross-border transfers. Together our programs drive the adoption of unified privacy practices, facilitate consumer education and choice, and offer consumers accessible, no-cost privacy dispute resolution.

YOUR IMPACT

As Director, Privacy Initiatives, you will help lead BBB National Programs' current and emerging global online data privacy self-regulatory programs. You will work with others to evaluate, innovate, and efficiently manage our programs and resources. You will have a critical role in bringing our self-regulation programs to new participants within the industries we currently serve and to new industries. In leading a team of privacy professionals, you will provide legal and policy analysis and advice in shaping and driving the development and execution of global privacy initiatives, products, partnerships, and programs. You will showcase your policy acumen; high ethical values; people management skills; excellent writing, advocacy, and public speaking skills; and influence internal and external stakeholders using your in-depth knowledge of privacy law, technology and adtech.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develop and monitor key performance indicators to ensure high quality, timely programmatic performance at a financially self-sustainable level
• Develop and maintain active liaison with relevant state and federal government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and internal policy organizations engaged in data privacy law
• Provide data privacy, security, and technology law expertise in the oversight of existing programs and growth of new programs.
• Provide legal guidance and develop approaches on privacy initiatives impacting privacy, data protection, emerging technology, and security, domestic and international.
• Maintain awareness of current policy, jurisprudence, and policy leaders relating to global, federal, and state privacy laws and standards.
• Represent BBB National Programs in conferences and meetings concerning global data privacy, consumer protection, independent industry self-regulation, and technology.
• Raise the visibility of the organization by engaging in public speaking and writing on new and emerging issues in privacy and technology.
• Educate and support colleagues in the organization on data privacy, security, and technology matters.
• Lead team of professionals, focusing on employee and program development and innovation
• Engage in business development to expand the reach of industry self-regulatory programs

WHAT YOU WILL BRING

Must have:

• JD with 7+ years of experience specifically focused on privacy, data protection, current and emerging technology (e.g., adtech, AI, IoT), data management and governance
• Relevant legal experience in-house at a corporation, law firm, think tank, or relevant government agency
• Experience providing pragmatic and actionable advice to stakeholders on various legal risks and obligations under data privacy and cyber security laws
• In-depth knowledge of data privacy
• Experience leading, coaching, and developing others
• Subject matter expertise in technology with experience in advising on data uses in AI, IoT, AdTech and/or emerging areas of technology
• Experience driving, prioritizing, and effectively managing cross-functional initiatives and an ability to work independently and with multi-stakeholder teams
• Sharp analytical and communication skills, demonstrated excellent legal and business judgment and strategic thinking
• Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work
• Executive presence
• Business and financial acumen
• Superior project management and decision-making skills
• Excellent written, verbal, advocacy, and public speaking skills
• Proficiency with website, mobile, IoT technology, emerging technologies (e.g. blockchain, metaverse, NFTs, digital health, connected cars)

• Strong Office 365 skills

• Prior experience as Chief Privacy Officer, in-house privacy counsel, privacy operations leader, or similar experience
• Knowledge of and/or experience with E.U. Privacy Shield, GDPR and/or Cross-Border Privacy Rules (CBPR)
• Prior business development experience
• Fortune 500 and/or Big 4 firm experience
• AMLAW 200 law firm experience
• Relevant government agency experience
• CIPP and/or PMP certification
• Membership in the bar of a relevant jurisdiction
