Working from more than 30 offices nationwide, The Trust for Public Land’s 300 employees help communities raise funds, conduct research and planning, acquire, and protect land, and design and renovate parks, playgrounds, trails, and gardens.

The HR team is looking to add HR Business Partner capacity to support organization-wide organizational development activities. This opportunity is ideally suited to an HR professional who enjoys both the day-to-day tasks of HR like recruitment and employee relations, but also has an interest and passion for process improvement and organizational development efforts.
This position can be located anywhere within a commutable distance of a TPL Office.  East Coast is preferred (New York, Connecticut, Washington DC, Boston) as the rest of the HR team is West Coast-based.

Essential Duties:

HR Business Partner Duties

  • Engage leaders to understand the needs of the business and help shape the approach needed through consultative meetings.
  • Guide the assigned business area through succession planning activities to promote development.
  • Assist with compensation-related matters such as pricing of new roles, job change/promotions
  • Develop strong relationships with business areas and offer solutions to human resources matters.
  • Leads assigned full-cycle recruitment efforts for assigned departments.   Responsible for a hands-on approach to screening and interviewing candidates, interview logistics management, interview question creation, reference checking, and job offers. Implements advanced sourcing strategies to identify and outreach to qualified candidates to support TPL’s Diversity Recruitment efforts.
  • Support efforts to build and retain a diverse pipeline of talent. This may include piloting innovative recruitment techniques, project managing internship and fellowship programs, mentorship programs, etc.
  • For assigned departments, provides client support to leaders on workforce planning, helping to resolve employee relations concerns, and generally providing guidance in resolving HR-related matters. Advocates on behalf of staff as needed.
  • For assigned departments, provides support to supervisors and staff via coaching and action planning on general management concerns – including performance issues, the annual review process, salary decisions, supervisory changes, etc.

 

Organizational Development Support

  • Supports departmental process improvement efforts including but not limited to researching best practices, convening, and facilitating cross-functional work groups, documentation of policies and practices, general project management, and implementation.  For example, project management of the re-design and implementation of revised grading and salary structure and associated compensation philosophy.
  • Supports efforts to enhance our employer brand with a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion emphasis. Keeps tabs on best practices in the field and ensures that our employer marketing efforts (tpl.org website, Glassdoor and LinkedIn accounts, job postings etc.) reflect those best practices.
  • Support Internal Communications function. Works with appropriate stakeholders on relevant internal communications efforts (drafting blogs, writing talking points for directors, outreach to staff for stories, editing documents, etc.). Supports efforts to enhance the clarity and effectiveness of TPL’s intranet.
  • Support staff engagement and morale initiatives. This may include the implementation and management of engagement and pulse surveys, the establishment of dashboards or other reports, project management of action plans, and follow-up as needed.

 Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, HR certificate strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in a professional human resources role.
  • Experience supporting or leading projects or efforts related to diversity, equity, and inclusion required.
  • Recruiting experience is required.
  • Experience working with a PEO is helpful.
  • Experience with process improvement or project management.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational abilities, attention to detail, promptness, and dependability.
  • Able to work with a high degree of self-direction and flexibility, especially with respect to taking initiative, prioritizing multiple tasks, and using excellent judgment to resolve problems.
  • Able to provide information and guidance to other employees in a compassionate, discreet way.
  •  Willingness to travel when offices reopen


As a full-time employee, you will be eligible for The Trust for Public Land’s comprehensive benefits program which includes medical, dental, and vision insurance, three weeks of vacation annually plus 16 paid holidays, and a 403(b)-retirement plan, currently with a 7% company match. We offer competitive salaries commensurate with experience.  Salary range based on experience: 90,000-120,000
