Job description

Since 1924, Houston SPCA has been the leading private, nonprofit animal welfare organization in the greater Houston region. Receiving no governmental funding, we rely upon community support to achieve our goals of improving and protecting the lives of animals in our community and alleviating their suffering and abuse.

Reporting to the Chief Financial and Administrative Officer, the Senior Director ofVolunteer Services and Community Outreach is responsible for managing and enhancing our Houston SPCA programs of Volunteerism, community education, and Community Outreach.

Essential Functions of the Position:

  • Plan, manage, and direct volunteer activities of Houston SPCA, which includes Wildlife Center of Texas.
  • Provide overall administration and the HR function of the Volunteer Program.
  • Manage employee staff during daily operations. Focus on staff development.
  • Oversee the recruiting process (on campus and in community) and background screenings for the volunteer program. Ensure proper orientation, training, direction, counseling, and redirection of Volunteers. Maintain volunteer materials, policies, and handbooks. Coordinate as appropriate with our employee policies.
  • Plan, manage, and direct Community Outreach and educational events of Houston SPCA. This includes activities both on campus and in the community, which occur during weekdays and on weekends.
  • Coordinate with the educational programs of Wildlife Center of Texas and strive to integrate its program with teh educational program of Houston SPCA.
  • Serve as representative of Houston SPCA to other animal protection groups, non-profit organizations, corporations, individuals, and other entities. Perform public presentations and prepare written materials to highlight Houston SPCA.
  • Administer on-site outreach events regarding group volunteering.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute community events, which include educational events (for multiple age groups) and Community service events (community vaccine/medical clinics, pet food distributions, adoption events, etc.). Ensure an appropriate number of events weekly and annually and which focus on desired audiences.
  • Coordinate on-campus tours for community organizations/entities and speaker bureaus. Coordinate all-organization events, including Open Houses. Support volunteerism activities at various fund-raising events.
  • Coordinate with other departments within Houston SPCA, for their volunteer needs and joint events. Manage policies and procedures between volunteers and employees, including their daily duties, volunteer development, and cross-training.
  • Oversee and perform the planning and execution of the curriculum, staff, and volunteers for our on-campus summer youth educational program (Critter Camp).
  • Execute the educational and outreach aspects of our community Home for the Holidays annual month-long Holiday adoption event.
  • Create strategic partnerships with our greater-Houston community, to support Houston SPCA’s mission.
  • Track program activities and successes and present relevant operational statistics.
  • Perform additional tasks and assume other responsibilities as assigned.
