About Children’s Literacy Initiative:
Founded in Philadelphia in 1988, Children’s Literacy Initiative (CLI) is a national 501c3 working to advance equity in public education in the U.S. by ensuring Black and Latinx children achieve reading success by the end of third grade. CLI accomplishes this through job-embedded coaching and professional development, seminars and workshops, and providing the books and materials teachers and children need along their early literacy journeys.

Learning to read has significance beyond building skills – it is an act of liberation. By helping educators learn and apply high-impact, culturally sustaining instructional strategies and nurturing dynamic professional learning communities, CLI is building lasting capacity in teachers and principals to advance equity in education.

Position Summary:


The Director of Strategic Partnerships at the Children's Literacy Initiative (CLI) will be responsible for identifying and cultivating new strategic client relationships toward the development of new business opportunities and driving growth initiatives for the organization. Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer, this position is instrumental in expanding CLI's reach and impact in improving educational inequity.

A successful candidate has measurable experience in revenue generating partnership development in the education space, and the ability to understand what types of services school systems are seeking over multi-year periods, what factors drive their decision-making about these services, how to build, maintain, and deepen strong relationships, and how to market our core services.


Role Responsibilities:

Business Development Strategy
: Lead the development and execution of CLI's business development strategy, aligning it with organizational goals and priorities.
Relationship Building: Design and implement creative and strategic approaches to establish and nurture relationships with new school systems and existing clients. Cultivate long-term partnerships that support CLI's objectives.
Communication: Collaborate with internal teams to effectively communicate CLI's mission, programs, and impact to external stakeholders. Develop compelling narratives and presentations to showcase CLI's work and value proposition.
Market Understanding: Stay abreast of trends and developments in education, particularly in the realm of children's literacy. Understand the needs and preferences of school systems and districts over extended periods, informing CLI's service offerings and strategies.
Revenue Generation: Drive revenue growth by identifying and pursuing opportunities for contracts and partnerships.
Collaboration: Work closely with internal teams, including Program Development, Marketing, and Finance, to align partnership efforts with organizational objectives and ensure seamless execution of initiatives.
Evaluation and Adaptation: Continuously evaluate partnership strategies and initiatives, leveraging data and feedback to refine approaches and optimize outcomes.
Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with a diverse range of stakeholders, including school leaders, district administrators, and funding organizations, to advance CLI's partnerships and advocacy efforts.

  • 5+ years of experience building and maintaining strong partnerships and client relationships in the K-12 education sector, ideally with school systems leaders
  • Track record of achieving ambitious revenue targets and driving tangible outcomes in partnership development
  • Proven experience in developing and executing strategic plans to drive business growth and impact
  • Proven leadership and management abilities, with a track record of fostering collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement
  • Learner mentality and actively explores research on new approaches to the work
  • Team player with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments and functions.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple initiatives simultaneously.
