Job Summary

The Director of Public Safety is responsible for providing a safe and secure environment for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors of Canisius University. The director ensures the department plays a critical role in the University's emergency preparedness and response. The director organizes safety training for the entire campus community. This is a full-time, 12-month position which reports to the Vice President for Student Affairs.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide 24/7/365 law enforcement, security, and Public Safety services for the entire campus community and visitors to the campus.
  • Recruit, hire, train and supervise the personnel and operation of the 24-member Public Safety department.
  • Responsible for the safety and security of all University buildings and grounds.
  • Enforce federal, state, and local laws, as well as University rules and regulations.
  • Administer and enforce parking regulations.
  • Formulate and administer policies for Public Safety personnel.
  • Prepare and oversee the Public Safety operational and capital budgets.
  • Participate in the administration of the campus crisis management plan.
  • Serve as liaison with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, as well as other community agencies.
  • Prepare and submit the annual Clery Report.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or related area, required.
  • 10 -15 years of progressively responsible professional/supervisory law enforcement experience required.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of university security, safety, law enforcement, intelligence, and investigations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with students, faculty, staff and the public.
  • Ability to think strategically and budget effectively in a financially constrained environment.
  • Ability to organize work effectively, prioritize objectives and exercise independent judgment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including weekend and evening hours.
  • New York State driver's license with a good driving record.
  • New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services certification as police officer or peace officer.

Compensation and Benefits:

Salary: $80,000 to $90,000 annually 

Please note that the compensation information is a good faith estimate of the base pay for this position. The selected candidate's actual base pay will be based on job-related, non-discriminatory factors including experience.  Information about the total compensation package  for this position will be provided during the interview process.

This is a full-time, salaried position. Benefits are available the first of the month after the full-time employee's date of hire and include - health, dental and vision insurance, life and long-term disability insurance, and retirement plan enrollment is available to full-time employees with contribution from the University after one year. Paid holidays, vacation, personal leave, and sick leave.  Tuition benefits are also available for full-time employees and their qualified dependents.
