Position Summary Information
Position Summary
The Director of Project Management reports to the Associate Vice President and Chief Information Officer and provides strategic leadership and Project Management expertise for Project Management in Information Technology. This position oversees the Project Management team, manages high-risk, high-visibility projects, and ensures that information technology projects across APSU are completed successfully, on time, and within budget.
Austin Peay State University is a four-year public, doctoral-level university, with six colleges and four Chairs of Excellence. The University has an enrollment of over 9,000 students and is located in Clarksville, Tennessee, a community of an estimated 166,000 people located approximately 40 miles northwest of Nashville, TN.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Oversee project strategy and planning to include defining project scopes, developing project plans and timelines, and managing project risks and issues.
  • Manage the intake and evaluation of new projects and identifies resources, including personnel and budgets.
  • Establish and maintain relationships and communicate project status, progress, and issues to key stakeholders and project sponsors, both internal and external.
  • Coordinate and manage resources to ensure project deadlines, timelines, and work plans are met and within budget.
  • Facilitate, evaluate, and resolve situations for projects with competing interests, multiple solutions, and limited resources.
  • Identify and mitigate project risk to avoid delays and cost overruns.
  • Manage and administer the Information Technology Project Management tool.
  • Improve the delivery of Projects by implementing Project Management best practices and identifying opportunities for process improvement and efficiency.
  • Work with project managers to ensure project deliverables are completed and accepted per Project Management plan and scope of work documents.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to project managers and foster a collaborative and efficient work environment.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Experience leading Project Management teams and managing staff.
  • Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience managing high visibility projects and communicating project status and progress to executive level stakeholders.
  • Ability to establish priorities on multiple projects in order to meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of Project Management phases, techniques, and tools.
  • Experience with Project Management software.
  • Knowledge of information technology concepts and processes.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders on technical and non-technical aspects of Projects, both verbally and in writing.

Physical Requirements
  • Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Project Management, Information Systems, Business, or related field.
  • A minimum of three years Project Management experience with a record of successful project delivery.
  • A minimum of two years supervisory experience

Preferred Qualifications
  • PMP or other Project Management certification
  • Master's Degree in Business, Information Systems, or related field
  • Experience overseeing Information Technology projects
  • Experience in higher education
