Department Summary

The Oregon Humanities Center's mission as a UO research center is interconnected to the UO's larger research and teaching mission and goals. As the UO's primary interdisciplinary research institute for the humanities, the OHC sponsors and supports diverse and cutting-edge:
Research and publication support for faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students.
Course development using the most recent discoveries and interpretations.
Public programming to ensure humanities research and knowledge generation is disseminated widely and for free.
Professional skills building for undergraduate humanities majors participating in an internship and fellowship practicum experience.
Advocacy and visibility for the humanities at the UO, regionally, nationally, and internationally.
At the OHC, the humanities are understood broadly to include literature; philosophy; history; religion; ethics; linguistics; the history, theory, and criticism of the arts; and historical or interpretive aspects of the social and natural sciences and the professions. Position Summary

The Oregon Humanities Center (OHC) is seeking a director for a three-year term beginning July 1, 2024. This is a part-time administrative appointment with compensation in the form of a stipend and course release. As a tenured member of the University's instructional faculty, the director also teaches half-time in their home unit during the term of the appointment. The initial appointment is for three years, with the possibility of renewal following a performance review.
The director reports to the Vice President for Research and Innovation (VPRI) and is responsible for the intellectual, programmatic, administrative, and fiscal leadership of the center, and works in close consultation and collaboration with the OHC's associate director to co-lead the center and oversee the center's three main areas of focus: humanities research, undergraduate humanities teaching, and public engagement.
The director advocates for and coordinates interdisciplinary humanities activities and guides the center in its role as a catalyst for stimulating humanities initiatives and programs both on and off campus. Existing programs include but are not limited to: faculty research and teaching fellowships; dissertation and graduate research fellowships; undergraduate fellowships and internships; publication subvention; "UO Today," the center's video and podcast interview program; and a wide variety of sponsored and co-sponsored public programs including endowed lectureships, interdisciplinary colloquia and professional conferences, museum exhibits, poetry and prose readings, movie screenings, and theatrical and musical performances.
Only tenured, full-time UO faculty full professors or advanced associate professors (has submitted or is in the process of submitting their promotion file) are eligible to apply. Emeritus faculty are not eligible. Candidates must have a doctorate in a humanities discipline; a distinguished record of teaching and scholarship; and at least three years of administrative experience, preferably at the level of department head, program director, or center or institute director. Experience working with boards and/or donors is highly desirable. The ability to effectively host "UO Today," the center's video interview program, is also desirable.

Minimum Requirements

Doctoral degree in a humanities discipline.
A distinguished record of teaching, research, and professional service appropriate for a full professor with tenure at the University of Oregon. Applicants should possess the rank of Full Professor at the University of Oregon; advanced Associate Professors who have submitted/are in the process of submitting their promotion file are also eligible to apply.
Three years administrative experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience as a department head, program director, or center or institute director.
Experience working with boards and/or donors.
Ability to effectively host "UO Today," the center's video interview program.
