Job Title: Director of Marketing & Communications
Department: Advancement
Reports To: Chief Advancement Officer
FLSA Status: This is a fulltime, 40 hours/week, Exempt level position
Salary: $100,000 - $120,000

For nearly 50 years, Children's Council has been the heart of childcare and early education in San Francisco, advancing the belief that high-quality childcare can transform lives and communities. By advocating for quality early care and education, empowering families with information and financial support, and building the capabilities of educators, we ensure that every child in San Francisco has the opportunity to reach their full potential. Our more than 130 team members help families navigate their childcare and preschool options and secure financial assistance to pay for it. We provide home-based childcare businesses with the training and resources to succeed. Through a wide range of free programs and workshops, we support parents and caregivers as they build child development skills. As the city's second-largest nonprofit contractor, with an annual budget of over $240 million, we are a major stakeholder in the childcare system. POSITION SUMMARY:
The Director of Marketing & Communications is responsible for raising the visibility of Children's Council through the development and implementation of the organization's marketing, communications, and media relations strategies. As the lead brand ambassador for Children's Council, the Director of Marketing & Communications provides strategic thought partnership to a team of senior leaders and key board members and serves as agency spokesperson when called upon. As the primary gatekeeper for all public-facing mass communications, she/he/they ensure the proper, consistent articulation of the organization's image, position, and mission to all internal and external constituencies. Reporting to the Chief Advancement Officer, the Director of Marketing & Communications plays a key leadership role in content and strategy for fundraising campaigns, while maximizing visibility and attendance for a full range of program workshops and special events.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Leads strategy, development and implementation for organizational marketing and communication efforts, leading a cross-section of internal staff to meet programmatic goals, in alignment with organizational strategic plan.
  • As the primary organization representative with media outlets, you will actively develop and nurture relationships with reporters and social media influencers.
  • You are the primary strategist, writer, and gatekeeper for content on all digital platforms and print publications. This includes flyers, emails, social media, website (including blog posts), signage, annual impact report and fundraising campaign materials.
  • Working across the organization, you will serve as an organizational storyteller, gathering, creating, and disseminating information for diverse internal and external audiences in print and electronic communications.
  • Seeks out and analyzes marketing, promotional and media opportunities through an organizational lens, recommending actions and providing critical guidance to executive leadership to maximize windows of opportunity to achieve our goals.
  • Enhance brand consistency and meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level audiences including the media, key influencers, donors, customers, and specific target internal audiences.
  • You will design, develop, and implement our organizational Marketing & Communications Plan, in collaboration with all departments (engaged with external relations with clients, partners, funders), the wider community or otherwise.
  • While raising the profile of CEO and executive team as leaders in the early care and education field, you are responsible for the advancement of our agenda through strategic marketing channels.
  • Develop talking points, speeches, and other communications for Chief Executive Officer. As well as supporting the CEO for their public appearances, media interviews and events.
  • You will collaborate with the Chief Technology Officer, external developers, designers and internal IT staff on long-range website enhancements and/or new website development.
  • Monitors, analyzes, and shares early care and education media coverage with organizational and advocacy leadership teams, recommending appropriate actions and responses.
  • In partnership with the Chief Advancement Officer, coordinates and convenes the Board Marketing & Communications Committee on an ad hoc basis. Regularly reports marketing and communications activities to the Board.
  • Will perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:
  • BA degree required in marketing, communications, journalism, or related field.
  • At least 7-10 years of experience in marketing, communications, or related field; preferably 5+ years in a management role in a nonprofit environment.
  • Superior writing, editing, proofreading, grammatical and presentation skills.
  • Highly collaborative style: high energy, maturity, and leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force with all constituent groups.
  • Commitment to diversity with the ability to work effectively with persons of diverse backgrounds and abilities.
  • Ability to work after hours as needed.
  • A background clearance is required.

Demonstrated competencies in:
  • Managing a comprehensive strategic communication, media relations, and marketing program to advance an organization's mission and goals.
  • Ability to position our strategic agenda and ECE subject matter to media to achieve high impact placements.
  • Ability to make sound decisions in a changing environment and anticipate future needs.
  • Deep understanding of design and print/digital publication production processes.
  • Superior IT skills and proficiency with the following platforms: Adobe Creative Suite, Salesforce, Meltwater, Canva, Classy, or other equivalent programs.
  • Ability to work effectively with senior leaders while managing time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Preferred familiarity with early care and education landscape at local, statewide and/or national level

COVID Policy
All staff are required to be fully vaccinated (barring application for medical or religious exemptions). Wearing masks in the office is optional for our staff.
Hybrid Work
We have adopted a hybrid working model and currently require employees to be present in the officeat least3 days per week, with the option to work 2 days per week remotely. There are a few roles where the hybrid schedule is not conducive. Similarly, there are a few positions that operate 100% remotely.All applicants should be comfortable with both the remote and in office scenarios.
Compensation and Employee Benefits
Salary Range:$100,000 - $120,000
