Description:

The Director, Marketing & Communications is responsible for planning, development, and implementation of all LAEP’s marketing strategies, marketing communications, and public relations activities, both external and internal. This role oversees development and implementation of support materials and services for LAEP stakeholders both internally and externally in the areas of Marketing, communications, and public relations. This role also directs the efforts of the marketing, communications, and public relations staff, if any, and coordinates at the strategic and tactical levels with the other functions of the LAEP.

The Marketing & Communications Director will be hired and supervised by the President and Chief Executive Officer of LAEP.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

Marketing, communications, and public relations

  • Responsible for creating, implementing, and measuring the success of a comprehensive marketing, communications and public relations program that will enhance the LAEP’s image and position within the marketplace and the public, and facilitate internal and external communications; and, all organization-wide marketing, communications and public relations activities and materials including publications, media relations, client acquisition and so forth.
  • Ensure articulation of LAEP’s desired image and position, assure consistent communication of image and position throughout the organization, and assure communication of image and position to all constituencies, both internal and external.
  • Responsible for editorial direction, design, production, and distribution of all organization-wide publications.
  • Coordinate media interest in the organization and ensure regular contact with target media and appropriate response to media requests.
  • Act as LAEP’s representative with the media.
  • Coordinate the appearance of all organization-wide print and electronic materials such as letterhead, use of logo, brochures, etc.
  • Develop, coordinate, and oversee programs, technical assistance, and resource materials to assist chapters in the marketing, communications and positioning of their activities.
  • Provide counsel to Program and Operations Directors on marketing, communications, and public relations.
  • Ensure that LAEP regularly conducts relevant market research and coordinate and oversee this activity. Monitor trends.
  • Leads projects as assigned, such as cause-related marketing and special events.

Planning and budgeting

  • Responsible for the achievement of Marketing/communications/public relations mission, goals, and financial objectives.
  • Ensure that evaluation systems are in place related to these goals and objectives and report progress to the President & Chief Executive Officer and ultimately, the Board.
  • Develop short- and long-term plans and budgets for the marketing/communications/public relations program and its activities, monitor progress, assure adherence, and evaluate performance.
  • Recommend short- and long-term organization goals and objectives to the President & Chief Executive Officer.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor systems and procedures necessary to the smooth operation of the marketing/communications/public relations function.
  • Keep informed of developments in the fields of Marketing, communications and public relations, not-for-profit management, and governance, and the specific business of LAEP and use this information to help LAEP operate with initiative and innovation.

Organizational strategy

  • Work with senior staff, other staff, and volunteers to develop and maintain a strategic perspective -- based on marketplace and constituent needs and satisfaction -- in organizational direction, program and services, and decision-making; and ensure the overall health and vitality of the LAEP.
  • Help make sure that the LAEP’s philosophy, mission and vision are pertinent and practiced throughout the organization.
  • Develop and coordinate means to seek regular input from the LAEP’s key constituencies regarding the quality of programs and services and the organization’s relevance.
  • Help formulate and administer policies to ensure the integrity of the LAEP.
  • Act as an internal consultant to bring attention and solutions to institutional priorities.

Organizational excellence

  • Ensure effective management within the marketing, communications, and public relations function, with provision for succession.
  • Design, support and oversee cross-functional teams throughout LAEP.
  • Performs other duties as required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position has high responsibility of a program at LAEP. The Marketing & Communications Director may have oversight of supervisors of a department of direct reports, if applicable. Includes some human resources responsibilities for direct reports. Confers with manager or director about human resources and operational issues. If no supervisory responsibilities, serves as single incumbent for critical function.

Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in marketing, communications, or public relations with
  • demonstrated success, preferably in the not-for-profit or association sector.
  • Demonstrated skills, knowledge and experience in the design and execution of Marketing, communications, and public relations activities.
  • Strong creative, strategic, analytical, organizational, and personal sales skills.
  • Experience developing and managing budgets, and hiring, training, developing, supervising, and appraising personnel.
  • Demonstrated successful experience writing press releases, making presentations, and negotiating with media.
  • Experience overseeing the design and production of print materials and publications.
  • Computer literacy in word processing, data base management and page layout.
  • Commitment to working with shared leadership and in cross-functional teams.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at a time.
  • Proficiency with MS Office, Google, and other data systems.
  • Background or experience with 501c3 organization.
  • Self-Starter – you should be able to learn quickly and be resourceful in finding answers to questions or problems you are not familiar with.
  • Commitment to beloved community, educational equity, and the mission of LAEP.
  • Cultural competence to work in a multicultural environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management, board, or other outside partners.
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and unwavering commitment to mission.
  • Experience working with volunteers is desirable.
  • Membership in IABC (International Association of Business Communicators) and IABC accreditation are desirable.
  • BA/BS in in journalism, marketing, public relations, or closely related field.
  • Advanced degree in journalism, marketing, public relations, or closely related field is strongly preferred.
  • 7-10 years in a senior level management position in a medium to large nonprofit organization is strongly preferred.

LICENSING AND CERTIFICATIONS (IF APPLICABLE)

  • Daily driving could be required, must provide own vehicle, valid Driver's License, and proof of California’s minimum vehicle insurance coverage.
  • Negative tuberculosis screen required.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.

DELEGATION OF AUTHORITY & WORK COMPLEXITY

  • The Marketing & Communications Director is hired by and reports directly to the President and Chief Executive Officer. This role has overall accountability and responsibility for the successful performance of all facets of program operational functions and/or other assigned areas of responsibility. This is inclusive of:
  • operations/planning,
  • financial solvency,
  • contractual/grant obligations and compliance standards, and
  • adherence to overall LAEP policy
  • Tasks and responsibilities require integration of diverse functional areas and involve variables that are more abstract. Work is substantially complex and varied, and requires the interpretation of technical and detailed guidelines, policies, and procedures in combination. High-level responsibility for budget, revenues, and/or expenditure authority of more than 2 departments.

Develops objectives and general policies and procedures for a specific program or functional area of responsibility within general scope of established operational goals and plans. Day-to-day work and decisions do not require direction or review by immediate supervisor. Frequently solves complex problems. End results are reviewed by supervisor. Strategic issues are referred to supervisor.
