Job description

The Director of Intervention Services (DIS) will lead and oversee all BUILD Community Violence Intervention/Interruption (CVI) programs and services. A successful DIS must be a culturally competent strategic leader with deep knowledge and experience in CVI programming and services. The DIS must demonstrate effective management of programs and teams and must have the vision to lead a driven, diverse team of individuals while demonstrating a passion for social change.
The DIS is responsible for managing a growing portfolio of programs which includes advocate/case management services such as SCAN, street outreach and reentry programming along with crisis response and victim services (Crisis response unit). The DIS will implement plans that provide support and services to individuals who may be affiliated with gangs and/or who may be involved with the legal system, as well as families impacted by violence. The DIS will develop and maintain strategic partnerships that support high quality CVI services which should lead to a reduction in community violence; this may include collaboration with state and local law enforcement agencies. The DIS must stay current on gang and violence trends in the community and should use those insights to inform intervention program strategy and services. The DIS will demonstrate high initiative, innovation, and an ability to communicate and work with diverse individuals and groups. The DIS reports directly to the Chief Program Officer (CPO).
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Lead and support the professionalization of the Community Violence Intervention/interruption (CVI) program and ensure alignment with community needs and organization priorities.
  • Develops an annual intervention plan which includes street outreach and strategies and hot spots in collaboration with other BUILD services such as mental health or workforce development.
  • Provide direct supervision to the Managers of Intervention Services, Crisis Response Manager (CRU) and Street Outreach.
  • Develop relationships and maintain regular contact with community organizations such as churches, schools, police departments, etc. to support intervention and anti-violence efforts.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of local gangs and activities that impact community violence.

  • Work in collaboration with the Monitoring-Evaluation-Learning (MEL) team in the collection and reporting of data and other program metrics.
  • Collaborate in the development of annual program objectives, performance metrics, and budgets.
  • Manage private and government funding related for intervention programming.
  • Responsible for ensuing programmatic compliance for grant funding.
  • Work in collaboration with the Development and Finance departments in developing grant proposals and budgets
  • Develop and support department staff; assists in the coordination of program activities as needed to ensure program objectives and funding requirements/deliverables.
  • Monitor programs' compliance with contractual agreements and grant requirements to ensure timely and accurate reporting.
  • Attend board meetings as necessary to inform and/or educate the board about trends in community violence and strategies for CVI.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • A minimum of five years of experience in intervention and community violence reduction services.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of local drivers of community violence and needs of individuals involved in gangs and the legal system.
  • Experience in establishing and maintain effective working relationships with groups driving and mitigating community violence
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data, must be able to use data to strategically assess issues and opportunities for the department.
  • Experience with government funding and grant-reporting lifecycles. Must be familiar with project design, proposal writing, project implementation and evaluation and learning.
  • Must possess excellent writing, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft suite, i.e., Word and Excel required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license, access to reliable transportation and willingness to travel locally.

Experience and Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in psychology, social work or criminal justice required. A minimum of 10 years of comparable program, life and/or military experience is acceptable in lieu of college degree. Master's degree is a plus.
  • A minimum of 5 years' experience in services aimed at reducing community violence and gang activity.
  • A minimum of 5 years' experience in program and team development
  • Must be adept at budget creation and management.
  • Highly organized to set priorities, develop a work schedule, and monitor progress towards goals.
  • Ability to build positive working relationships with internal and external partnerships which support the achievement of organizational goals.

Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.?
  • As of October 15, 2021, all BUILD employees are required to submit proof of full vaccination status.
