Role summary

Reporting directly to the Executive Vice President, the Director of External Communications is a senior-level position responsible for driving the company's integrated communications strategy. In this role, you will develop and implement communications strategy and brand position, manage External Communications and public relations consultants, interact with reporters, work closely with company leadership, and lead crisis management.

An important part of the job will be coordinating and engaging with internal teams (marketing, product, data analytics, and policy) to maximize opportunities to support Renew Home and our partners. Key to your success will be establishing and elevating a new brand within the energy and smart home sector. You need to be a supporter of our mission and ready for an incredible journey.

What you will do

    • Develop and implement a proactive External Communications strategy - inclusive of media relations, speaking engagements, awards, events, content, and digital/social media - to raise awareness of Renew Home and its transformational initiatives.
    • Monitor industry trends, tools, and technologies and implement innovative traditional, event, and social/online communications initiatives.
    • Build and drive a structured and measurable executive communications program for the CEO and selected company leaders. This includes establishing a narrative that demonstrates industry leadership and that advances key business objectives as well as coaching leadership and writing message points for high-impact opportunities.
    • Drive engagement through strategic thought leadership initiatives with key external partners and platforms.
    • Develop and, if necessary, implement crisis communications plans. Train and prep company spokespeople.
    • Identify additional company spokespeople, evaluate and determine the narratives for each, and pursue thought leadership opportunities (speaking, media, social) accordingly, ultimately building awareness and increasing positive reputation for the brand.
    • Closely align with company leadership on upcoming company and project milestones and announcements to ensure awareness and determine how/when to publicize to media and partners.
    • Establish and work to meet measurable KPIs to ensure the effective use of resources and performance data to determine the effectiveness of External Communications strategy and implementation.

Requirements

    • Minimum 10 years of communications experience.
    • Excellent writing, speaking and presentation skills with ability to serve as the company’s spokesperson.
    • Strong project management and collaborative skills.
    • Clean energy industry experience preferred.
    • Team player and builder - leads by example and creates an inclusive environment, managing people with a human touch to create a great place to work that inspires and motivates everyone.
    • Ability to work closely with marketing, product, policy, and data analytics to craft a compelling narrative for our company and mission.
    • Possess strong media relations skills and a deep understanding of the media landscape. Proven ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with journalists, editors, and influencers, resulting in consistent media coverage and positive press.
    • Exhibit exceptional crisis communication skills, including rapid response, message development, and stakeholder management during challenging situations. Skilled in effectively mitigating risks to protect and enhance the organization's reputation.
    • Good judgment and attention to detail - particularly in confidential situations and high-pressure times.
    • Excellent ability to understand and translate complex ideas for diverse stakeholders.
    • Intellectual curiosity, self-motivation, resourcefulness, integrity, and an eagerness to take responsibility for the continuous improvement of processes and results.
    • Self-motivated and able to adapt quickly to changing priorities and tight deadlines
