The Animal Resources department is looking for students and other interested individuals for temporary work over the summer months. This position involves assisting, and providing support to Animal Care operations. Responsibilities include the basic daily care and husbandry of laboratory animals housed in a research environment. Strong attention to detail when observing animals and completing documentation is necessary.
This Temporary Animal Technician will be responsible for:
- Cleaning and sanitizing of the animal cages and equipment.
- Assembling clean cages including clean food and water for the animals
- Operating equipment such as tunnel washers, cage washers, bottle washers and autoclaves
- Maintaining ARCH Animal Care Documentation
- Observing Safety and Personal Hygiene Procedures
- Assisting, and providing support to the Animal Care operations
- Basic daily care and husbandry of laboratory animals housed in a research environment, as outlined in ARCH’s standard operating procedures and in accordance with all applicable laws and regulatory guidelines (Animal Welfare Act, USDA, AAALAC, and IACUC)
- Assisting and providing technical support for quality assurance functions
- Providing basic staging and support to ARCH Operations
To qualify, you must have:
- A high school level of education and the ability to read and understand written instructions. No Prior experience required
- The analytical skills to gather and interpret data in situations in which the information or problems are relatively routine
- The ability to report to work and be retained at work in the event of a disaster, or weather-related event, if necessary
- The ability to possibly work on weekends, holidays, and off hours
- The ability to work directly with animals including rodents, with no preexisting allergies to animals, hair or dander
- Must be fit tested and wear a N95 mask (by being clean shaven for proper and necessary fit) or alternatively if necessary a PAPR (Powered Air Purifying Respirator) as required in specific locations within ARCH throughout the workday
- Steel toed boots to be worn at all times
- Attention to detail when observing animals and completing documentation is necessary as employee error could cause catastrophic results to investigator research; the animals are extremely valuable and are sensitive research models
