Bank of Marin, voted by our employees as one of the "Best Places to Work" in the North Bay Business Journal, is looking for a Director of Audit, Compliance and Risk to join our Finance and Accounting Division at our corporate office in Novato.
The Director of Audit, Compliance and Risk serves as a trusted advisor and is responsible for assessing and mitigating significant competitive, regulatory and technological threats to the bank’s capital, liquidity and earnings. The Director of Audit, Compliance and Risk is hired and managed by, and accountable to, the CFO and CEO of the Bank; and is expected to maintain open and transparent lines of communication with the Board of Directors’ Audit Committee Chair and members of the committee, who will contribute to the performance evaluations of the risk management function. Areas of responsibility include Enterprise Risk Management, Compliance, Fraud Prevention, Internal Audit, Internal Control Testing, Vendor Management and Insurance. The Risk Management function ensures key financial models operate accurately and effectively based on sound, documented principles and assumptions. Risk Management should maintain a data repository and workflow management tool that supports the identification, measurement and monitoring of risks and controls efficiently for all areas of the bank. The Director of Audit, Compliance and Risk develops risk maps, articulates risk appetite, calculates value at risk, develops strategies to mitigate threats, monitors progress of risk mitigation efforts, evaluates change controls and risks, and communicates to the board and throughout the organization.
Essential Job Duties:
- Collaborate with the executive team to identify risks that stem from various business functions and span across divisions. Ensure that risk concepts are integrated into strategic planning. Quantify risk limits, develop plans to mitigate risks and advise on directing capital to projects based on risk.
- Communicate to key stakeholders regarding the risk profile of the business.
- Assess risk throughout the organization. Evaluate, maintain and evolve the organization’s integrated risk framework embodied in the risk management organization and enterprise risk management tool. Build a business plan for the risk function, write business cases for investments and projects, and evaluate risks associated with projects that span across divisional lines.
- Regulatory Compliance, Fraud Prevention and Vendor Management are structured to provide centralized policies, frameworks and support with responsibility for compliance falling directly on delivery teams. Ensure that policies and frameworks adhere to high standards of risk management and undertake all risk monitoring and reporting activities according to regulatory expectations and within prescribed timeframes. Expedite the escalation of any issues, following up with swift identification of root cause and implementation of mitigation strategies.
- Work with the Bank’s Insurance Risk Manager and Brokers to complete annual insurance review present to the Board of Directors and recommend changes to policies and coverage.
- Investigate the risks inherent in a target company that may be acquired, as well as the state of its risk management practices.
- Develops and implements internal audit program. Coordinates and supervises financial and Operational audits of branches and departments as well as outsourcing of external audits.
- Prepares audit reports for management and the Audit Committee
- Provides supervision and guidance to direct reports in accordance with the Bank’s policies and applicable laws.

Job Skills:
- Expert in risk management, model risk management, regulatory compliance for financial institutions, internal auditing theory, standards, procedures, and techniques.
- Strong understanding of digital and corporate technology systems, networks, IT infrastructure and cyber threats. Able to conduct risk assessments, apply standard practices and respond to emerging trends.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and GAAP standards.
- Excellent written/verbal communication, listening, negotiation and presentation skills. Must be able to navigate a diverse set of stakeholders, anticipate issues and address proactively.
- Must be able to distill a large and complex body of information into meaningful summary and articulate clearly to audiences with varying degrees of expertise and advocate effectively for strategic efforts to reduce the organization's risk exposure.
- Ability to lead, manage, coach, and train subordinates within the department. In addition, manage externally sourced internal audit resources.
- Experience working in or with information technology or cybersecurity teams strongly preferred.
- Experience partnering with an executive team preferred with a high level of written and oral communication skills, as well as a strong knowledge of processes.
Professional Experience:
20 years of progressively responsible risk management experience for financial institutions. Extensive knowledge of banking activities and regulations, compliance requirements, fraud prevention and potential threats to monetary transactions.
Educational Experience:
Master’s degree (M.A.) or equivalent; or equivalent combination of experience and/or training.
The hiring pay range for this position is $155,991 - $206,564. In addition to the pay range listed, all bank positions are eligible for incentive compensation, which varies based on role. The pay rate for a successful applicant depends on a variety of factors including but not limited to geographic location, work experience, education, and/or skill level.
