JOB DESCRIPTION

As one of the oldest senior service agencies in LA, SBSS has grown from operating a single senior center in Mid-City to what it is today - a dynamic senior service agency developing new models of care and providing innovative services throughout the Greater Los Angeles Area. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

For this multisite and multiprogram position, the Director of programs has an externally facing role managing relationships in the community. There also is a heavy emphasis on team management, development, and establishing standards of performance across all programs.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Programs, the Director of Health and Wellness will be responsible for the operational success of SBSS ensuring seamless team management and development, program delivery, and quality control and evaluation. In this newly established role, the Director of Health and Wellness will manage a growing staff and build a volunteer program.

Position Overview

  • Project Management
  • Assess current member learning infrastructure and identify opportunities to enhance access, engagement, and program delivery
  • Review past and existing calendars, courses, materials, and best practices for in person, online, or offline programming
  • Monitor learning outcomes and program efficacy through data collection in the form of surveys, interviews, and group feedback sessions
  • Collaborate with other SBSS departments and external partners to improve service delivery across the organization through digital mediums
  • Serve as liaison between SBSS staff, external research partners, and community groups
  • Monitor and manage program budget
  • In conjunction with the Director of Development, identify sources of, and opportunities for, financial support to ensure long-term sustainability of the program.
  • Monitor progress to key deliverables, and report progress to SBSS leadership

  • Manage volunteer instructors and SBSS staff part of program

Responsibilities

Leadership:

  • Cultivate existing relationships with vendors with the goal of ensuring sufficient space and resources, and access to services.
  • Develop and implement strategies that will maximize synergies among program areas.

Team Management and Development:

  • Develop and implement a system to evaluate the skill, experience, and professional development needs of all staff.
  • Implement a professional development program to address employee experience and skill gaps.
  • Work with staff to develop objective performance measurements across all sites, to ensure consistent, high-quality evaluation and goal setting for all employees.
  • Instill a sense of accountability among team members by modeling tight oversight of individual and organization performance standards.
  • Recruit, hire, and oversee training and orientation of program staff members.

Program Development:

  • Proven track record of building and expanding programs and classes
  • Ability to train and lead programs and classes when necessary
  • Proven track record of evaluation of programs
  • Experience managing programs across multiple sites
  • Experience working in a collaborative network with external stakeholders and partners
  • Experience with scaling programs and managing growth
  • Using the existing balanced score card and program dashboard; establish consistent, objective program performance standards of accountability
  • Work with the Membership Manager to build the volunteer program by recruiting, training, and placing volunteers at all of our sites.

Administration:

  • Experience creating and managing budgets and contract deliverables
  • Strong computer skills
  • Experience collaborating with development to create proposals and grants
  • Schedule activities at the main sites
  • Develop weekly activity calendars
  • Schedule and coordinate staff to present on disaster preparedness
  • Schedule and monitor vaccine clinics
  • Oversee the Prop A transportation program and manage the Prop A program Lead

Qualifications

This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual with team management experience to grow and further develop a proven program. The successful candidate will lead programs, partner with the Senior Director and work collaboratively with a high-performance management team.

Specific requirements include:

  • Demonstrated success developing and evaluating program models, and selecting and successfully operationalizing innovative programs
  • Proficient in using technology as a management reporting tool and experience working with information technology staff to develop and implement program evaluation systems
  • Strong project management skills managing complex, multifaceted projects resulting in measurable successes and program growth
  • Experience having worked with a high-performance, collaborative, constructive peer group
  • Strength in hiring, recruiting, managing, developing, coaching, and retaining individuals and teams, empowering them to elevate their levels of responsibility, span-of-control and performance
  • Deep understanding of human resources, employee performance improvement plans, and corrective action policies
  • Demonstrated results in managing through complex systems and proven experience negotiating win-win agreements
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with exceptional attention to details
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a commitment to and passion for SBSS’s mission
  • Spanish or Korean language ability preferred

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be reliable and able to relate well to seniors.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.
  • Possess a valid class C driver’s License; experienced driver with a clean driving record and vehicle insurance.
  • Exceptional listening skills, a collaborative style coupled with adaptability and flexibility, high energy and the ability to prioritize.
  • Considerable knowledge of gerontology and recreational activities for older adults.
  • Strong organization and time management skills with the ability to prioritize.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and follow written and oral instructions in English.
  • Proficency with Microsoft Office.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position provides general supervision and support to on-site staff in collaboration with other supervisors, managers, and/or directors.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the responsibilities of this job, the employee is required to talk and hear. The employee is often required to sit and use their hands and fingers, to handle or feel and to manipulate keys on a keyboard. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision.  This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift 10 lbs., lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.

Travel 

Minimum travel is expected for this position.

This position will be housed at the 3 main sites, Monday and Tuesday at the Echo Park site, Wednesday at the Mid City site, Thursday and Friday at the Hollywood site.

Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree preferred; or four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, percentages

and other related accounting, financial and payroll entries.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form, ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
