ABOUT THE ROLE:
The Director of Marketing is responsible for planning and executing NCSL marketing activities. The Director works to promote NCSL events, meetings, services and policy deliverables such as reports, databases, podcasts and webinars. The Director also works to develop marketing materials, such as print collateral, in support of the NCSL Foundation and NCSL programs. The Director’s responsibilities include optimizing and managing marketing campaigns, including e-mail, paid and organic social media, and print; overseeing NCSL’s graphic design strategy; collecting, analyzing and using data to improve marketing efforts; developing marketing collateral; and managing staff. The Director reports to the Chief Communications Officer and serves as a member of the communications leadership team.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:

  • Develops marketing plans and strategies, establishes priorities and delegates marketing tasks to staff.
  • Evaluates the impact of marketing campaigns and uses data to inform future decisions.
  • Provides strategic marketing consultation with internal stakeholders.
  • Works with topic experts to develop and approve content for marketing campaigns.
  • Develops marketing materials for NCSL meetings, the NCSL Foundation and other NCSL programs.
  • Coordinates marketing efforts with the Publishing and Digital Content team, Public Affairs team and Meetings team to ensure NCSL’s brand consistency across communication materials and events.
  • Manages email marketing calendar, including approximately 40 NCSL newsletters.
  • Produces reports and review analytics to identify trends and areas for optimization.
  • Researches changing trends and best practices for email and digital marketing.
  • Develops, manages, and reports on effectiveness of digital marketing campaigns.
  • Manages external vendors as needed to execute marketing activities.
  • Organizes, manages, and coordinates the work of staff across multiple projects and activities.
  • Researches and recommends new marketing strategies to increase visibility for NCSL and achieve increased member engagement.
  • Manages and mentors a staff of approximately 4 people.
  • Coordinates with NCSL programs to develop and carry out marketing plans promoting new resources, meetings and other NCSL activities.
  • Collaborates effectively with a variety of stakeholders and vendors.
  • Travels to events on a limited basis.

Supervisor/Management Responsibilities:
As a leader in the organization, you will supervise, support and coach your staff as well as cultivate leadership and management skills among supervisory staff on your team. In addition, you will:

  • Recruit, interview, hire and train new staff.
  • Oversee the workflow of individual team members and the program overall.
  • Provide constructive and timely performance evaluations.
  • Provide employees the opportunity for ongoing professional development within the assigned topic areas.
  • Handle discipline and termination of employees in accordance with organization policy.


THE WORK ENVIRONMENT: This full-time position is mostly performed in an office environment, on or off-site, with prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. NCSL provides a unique hybrid remote work policy with the requirement that staff travel on their own fare to the NCSL office once a month for team meetings and professional development. Employees routinely use standard office equipment such as laptops, printers, scanners, copy machines, and smartphones. Occasional travel by airplane, including overnights and weekends, is required. Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS FOR SUCCESS:
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree plus ten years of relevant and progressive work experience.
  • Five years of experience managing staff (i.e. planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating work).
  • Experience working in state policy, legislatures, nonprofits, foundations, or government organizations preferred.
  • Expertise in state government (particularly state legislatures), politics and current affairs preferred, as well as a demonstrated understanding of how to present information in a bipartisan manner.
  • Ability to communicate and work with others in the organization, within and outside of the communications division, as well as state legislators of both political parties and legislative staff who may be partisan or nonpartisan.
  • Past experience in state government, legislative institutions or a membership-based organization is a plus.
  • Experience with email marketing platforms (such as MailChimp, Constant Contact or others), email optimization and best practices.
  • Extensive knowledge of branding and consistent implementation.
  • Expertise in state government (particularly state legislatures), politics and current affairs preferred, as well as a demonstrated understanding of how to present information in a bipartisan manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to take a project from concept to launch.
  • Attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Excellent writing, speaking, analytical and organizational skills.
  • Ability to coordinate and execute efforts of a team.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, multi-task and meet deadlines.
  • Sound judgement in communicating information in a neutral, nonpartisan manner.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Sound judgment in communicating information in a neutral, non-partisan manner.
  • A basic understanding and appreciation of representative democracy.
