Position Overview
The Director for Fraternity & Sorority Life will provide leadership to the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life (OFSL) and affiliated Greek-letter organizations at the University of Idaho. The position will guide efforts in retention and care practices for the university and maintain relevant traditions while establishing a vision for future direction on campus for Fraternity & Sorority Life. The director must have extensive knowledge regarding best practices in Student Affairs and Fraternity and Sorority advising and combine them with the needs of the institution. The incumbent will be responsible for providing holistic advising and leadership of the Greek community and will serve as the primary representative of the university's Greek system to external constituencies (alumni, headquarters partners, parents, community leaders, etc.).
This position provides supports and services to 1700 students who belong to 10 Panhellenic Sororities, 18 Interfraternity Council Fraternity chapters, and 7 Multicultural Greek Organizations. The director acts as advisor to all peer governing councils and fraternity & sorority chapters in collaboration with OFSL staff and volunteers. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Students, the director is responsible for developing and implementing university policy in regarding Greek-letter organizations, as well as strategic initiatives and programs to grow and strengthen the University of Idaho Fraternity and Sorority Life community. This position will promote a vibrant FSL community committed to academic excellence, leadership development, community service, philanthropy, and diversity. The director will have experience with new member recruitment, hazing prevention, and program development and will work collaboratively with university partners and the local community to support Fraternity and Sorority Life organizations. The decisions and outcomes rendered by this position will carry significant weight as it pertains to the direction of Fraternity and Sorority Life at the University of Idaho.
The director provides leadership in addressing inappropriate behavior, working closely with campus partners (such as Conduct & Community Standards, Title IX investigations, Academic Affairs, Counseling Services, and the Women's Center), community partners (Moscow Police Department, Alternatives to Violence of the Palouse, and Gritman Medical Center), national headquarters, and alumni to the Fraternity and Sorority Life community. The director supervises up to two full-time professional staff members (two assistant directors and one program coordinator). The director will be required to work evenings and weekends as necessary to meet the needs of the students. The director manages an operating budget that exceeds $200,000 annually.

Position Qualifications
Required Experience
  • Two years of professional experience within a university or fraternity/sorority headquarters setting.
  • Direct involvement and/or working experience with Fraternity and Sorority Life.
  • Experience with being an active alumni within Greek letter organization.
  • Supervising professional staff.
  • Preparing and presenting educational and leadership workshops.
  • Developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with Fraternity and Sorority community constituents including inter/national headquarters staff, alumni advisory board leadership, faculty and staff advisers, alumni, and parents to advance the mission and values of the Fraternity and Sorority community.

  • The Director of Fraternity & Sorority Life may participate in an on-call rotation for student affairs administrators as needed throughout the academic year.
  • Must be able to work various hours throughout the day, night, and weekends.
  • Duties may require working extended hours.

Additional Preferred
  • Master's degree in Education, Higher Education, Administration, Business or related field.
  • Doctoral degree in higher education or related field.
  • Experience working in Greek community at a mid-sized public institution.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Experience training and applying conflict resolution, restorative justice, and/or informal resolution techniques.
  • Five or more years of progressively increasing responsibility in Student Affairs, preferably in Fraternity & Sorority Life.
  • Experience with change management, community building, and engaging multiple key stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Experience demonstrating ability to use good judgment when making decisions without immediate direction and/or supervision.
  • Experience and knowledge expertise in college Fraternity and Sorority systems and current topics in student life in higher education.
  • Knowledgeable and ability to interpret and apply related federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, rules and regulations as well as knowledge of and the ability to interpret and apply related university and (inter)national council policies, procedures, principles, and practices.
  • Ability to take initiative, balance competing priorities, and exercise sound judgment under pressure.
  • Ability to demonstrate cultural competence including proven effectiveness in serving the needs of a diverse undergraduate student population.
  • Potential for interaction with disruptive and/or unruly individuals.
