Description
Position: Director, Editorial
Department: Marketing
FLSA Grade: Exempt, Full-Time
Salary Range: $140,000-$160,000
Job description:
Redefining what an orchestra can be, the Los Angeles Philharmonic is as vibrant as Los Angeles, one of the world's most open and dynamic cities. Led by Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, we believe in the transformative power of live music to build community, foster intellectual and artistic growth, and nurture the creative spirit.
The Director, Editorial provides oversight and direction for branded and editorial content produced by the LA Phil. This position is instrumental in telling the many stories of the LA Phil, primarily through program information and digital content deployed in campaigns on social media platforms and the LA Phil websites and apps. Content developed by the Editorial team supports the organization's varied programs including the LA Phil, Hollywood Bowl, The Ford, philanthropy and learning initiatives and YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles). Reporting to the Senior Director, Communications, the Director, Editorial takes a holistic view of the organization in forming an overall, institutional content strategy that seeks to more deeply engage audiences.
You'll be responsible for:

  • Providing strategic editorial direction, both short- and long-term, and overseeing the creation of all written copy to ensure that is accurate, captures the LA Phil brand, and creates an engaging experience for our audiences
  • Leading the editorial team of in-house writers and freelance editors in the execution of all digital and print content produced by the LA Phil
  • Owning our org-wide editorial content calendars and communications planning; curating season and program messaging and feature stories
  • Collaborating with the Creative, Digital, Video, and Social teams to identify key narratives, essential stories, required content and assets, and the overall brand tone and voice required to drive audience growth
  • Creating content to support executive communications and donor communications
  • Maintaining the brand voice of the LA Phil through the management of our LA Phil Style Guide and Writing Standards, including our writing guide to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and our guide to inclusive storytelling
  • Advising on trends in marketing, digital journalism, and social content to adjust our strategy and messaging as needed
  • Acting as a thought partner on the senior communications team and advising on strategic marketing

Minimum Requirements
You must have:
  • Minimum 8-10 years experience producing strategic marketing content
  • Demonstrated commitment to storytelling and the ability to tailor messages by audience
  • Exceptional copywriting and editing skills
  • Experience working collaboratively with creative and digital content teams
  • A robust understanding of writing for print, digital and social, with the ability to align messaging across multiple channels and platforms
  • Experience leading a team of writers and editors
  • Experience managing editorial budget and expenses
  • Experience managing editorial workflow; experience using SharePoint or other shared work platform and/or experience using a work management tool like Monday.com, Trello, or Asana

It's an added plus if you have:
  • A background in journalism, marketing, or writing
  • Experience in the performing arts or music industries
  • Solid knowledge of classical music and experience with other musical genres
  • Secondary language fluency (Spanish)
