PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The Director, Aviation manages the multi-functional work of acquiring and operating company aircraft to transport authorized personnel and customers in the conduct of company business. The role is accountable for the overall safe operation of the flight department, regulatory and policy compliance, and representing aviation as part of corporate leadership and in coordination with other functions. Oversee the arrangement of all charter, leased and personal aircraft activity utilized in the conduct of company business.
Span of Control: Leads organization of pilots, technicians, and administrative staff
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Knowing the Customer
Maintain effective communications and relationships with flight department stakeholders including other company components with aviation business interest related to other corporate aircraft travel.
Setting Strategy
Leads with a clear view of where the organization needs to be in 3 to 5 years and leads team and other leaders to develop and implement strategies to align with the enterprise needs. Continues to foster a deep understanding of the aviation industry, to include the key drivers and influences in the industry. Keeps a forward looking, long term, view of key trends and activities which could significantly impact Owens Corning.
Execute Strategy
Structures, inspires, and puts the organization into action to deliver the strategic objectives and supporting goals as defined in an annual operating plan
  • Fund and resource projects, initiatives, and key objectives, which are critical to successful strategy execution, ongoing performance elevation and continuous improvement of the organization's processes and people
  • Develop and attract the talent required to execute the strategy

Directing Operations
Responsible for ensuring all activities adhere to the highest ethical standards, consistent with OC's values and business code of conduct. In addition, this role is accountable to:
  • Accountable for collaborating with Strategic Sourcing organization to negotiate all third-party provider contracts, fleet leases and fuel
  • Assure corporate processes and purchasing transactions adhere to all corporate and sourcing policies, including Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) and proper Levels of Authority (LOA) approvals
  • Monitor the financial condition of the operation in relation to approved budgets and programs. Institute required contingency actions.
  • Manage and appraise the work of the functional managers. Ensure proper emphasis on the safety and service aspects of their work, including oversight of Safety Management System (SMS) certification compliance and Business Aviation Safety Consortium (BASC) certification compliance.
  • Monitor and measure operation performance and results against external sources from operations of a comparable nature (Leverage Aviation Director Roundtable (ADR), and National Business Aviation Association (NBAA))
  • Maintain sound business and personal relationships with government, community, political, customer and supplier personnel whose interests or activities may impact or be affected by the operation, including National Business Aviation Association (NBAA), Toledo Lucas County Port Authority (TLCPA), and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
  • Accountable for the regulation compliance and inspection with the local community, state, and federal, to adhere to set codes and guidelines as it pertains to the fuel farm
  • Responsible for the maintenance of the approved spill plan for the fuel farm, which also includes the training of employees to meet the safety criteria set forth in the plan
  • Management of the contract fuel purchase process with approved provider
  • Oversee company-wide charter, leased and personal aircraft activity including definition of safety and insurance standards, review and endorsement of continuing agreements and arrangements of individual charter flights. Periodically record and report all known company executive aircraft activity.
  • Communicate consistently regarding results and the status of key initiatives, and on forward looking risks and opportunities within the organization
  • Provide effective leadership, both near and long term to department leaders; staff the leadership with the best-in-class talent in all positions and provide clearly defined roles and objectives
  • Solve problems with speed to ensure stakeholders' needs/issues are highest priority in our day-to-day operations
  • Set clear financial/operating compliance expectations, and holds employees accountable to the standards
  • Evaluate and assess controls in the operation, measure effective controls and ensure the right actions are in place to address opportunities
  • Ensure an effective regulatory and business controls environment

Leading and Develop Talent
  • Designs the organization in a way that creates "complete" jobs with strong accountability and development opportunities
  • Creates an environment where talent is developed through effective performance management and talent evaluation
  • Effectively creates and fills openings with strong, competent candidates using the appropriate mix of internal promotions and external recruitment to satisfy near-term performance, longer-term succession needs and to ensure the organization has the necessary outstanding talent
  • Invests in the growth and development of direct reports and other identified talent in their organization
  • Engaged in personal development while maintaining personal technical knowledge and expertise in the various function facets of business aviation
  • Partners with other business leaders in driving performance management throughout the function by recognizing strong performers and coaching marginal performers
  • Regarded by the employees of Owens Corning as a role model for their growth, development and conduct

JOB REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred
  • Minimum of 7 - 10 years of experience in Corporate Aviation organization with progressive leadership responsibility
  • Must hold an Airline Transport Rating
  • Must hold a First Class medical
  • A minimum of 5,000 flight hours and be proficient on current company aircraft (limited to two types)

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
  • Working across functions, regions and business boundaries
  • Experience influencing and coordinating within a matrix environment
  • Demonstrated rigor in execution, and ability to work with all levels in the organization
  • Experience working with internal and external stakeholders

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
  • Demonstrates knowledge with respect to the operation of a Flight Department and the content of the Flight Operations Manual
  • Ability to carry out the duties and responsibilities to ensure safety
