Operational Risk provides leadership in the planning, development and implementation of the operational risk framework, policies, standards, and procedures which are aligned with the Bank's strategic goal.


This role will be responsible for independently assessing the effectiveness of the bank’s processes, procedures and policies on both 1st and 2nd lines of defense. The team will identify, report, and communicate the effectiveness of Optum Bank’s governance processes and procedures and will recommend and implement risk management best practices and controls to mitigate current and upcoming risks.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead, Participate and Manage reviews of different functions within the bank and effectively document and communicate findings, limitations of the processes and recommendations to the process owners
  • Define review scope, perform walkthroughs of processes to evaluate the adequacy of the controls and develop tests and perform testing to assess control effectiveness
  • Prepare detailed, independent review of individual processes, Commercial, consumer and SMB underwriting and ongoing reviews of counterparties with credit risk. Review will include analysis of adherence with established procedures and regulatory guidance and document conclusions clearly and concisely
  • Credit Risk reviews will include checking the accuracy of credit ratings, timeliness of any rating changes, accuracy and timeliness of impairment analysis, identification of process weaknesses, and adherence to applicable bank credit policies and procedures, laws, and regulations
  • Provide effective challenge to existing policies, procedures, credit rating methodologies, and processes and ensure they meet applicable laws and regulations
  • Ensure relevant parties consisting of process owners and senior management are informed on a timely basis, of significant findings arising from the review
  • Follow up on review recommendations and assess management and process owner’s corrective actions
  • Prepare and lead industry reviews to assess portfolio risks, sector trends and emerging risks

Required Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of relevant banking, credit risk or audit and control experience
  • 7+ years of experience working in relevant areas such as internal control/ risk management areas, Audit, and/or Finance
  • Experience in lending, credit risk management, regulatory supervision, credit audit or similar work experience with Commercial, Consumer and Small Business experience
  • Solid technical experience consisting of knowledge of credit analysis in various sectors, rating analysis/methodologies, banking processes and/or credit/loan documentation
  • Knowledge of banking regulations related to Commercial, Consumer and Small business lending and risk management
  • Functional background in finance and accounting
  • Proven solid project management skills and ability to multi-task
  • Proven ability to effectively collaborate and work in team environment with diverse stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to present with impact and build consensus across senior stakeholder groups


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or master’s degree
  • Experience working within healthcare finance
  • Experience contributing to development of materials and reports for senior and executive level management (e.g., Board and Management Level Committee)
  • Experience managing and leading team of junior analysts
  • Demonstrated relationship management skills including managing and engaging stakeholders, customers, and vendors, and building relationship networks

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
