Job Summary
Oversee the Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) Unity Center in the development and implementation of programs, events, scholarships, and services that support BIPOC and First Gen students on campus. Provide leadership and direction in creating and maintaining a campus environment that supports, reflects, and affirms equity, inclusion and belonging for BIPOC and First Gen students, in collaboration with students, campus partners, alumni, staff, and faculty, while serving as an institutional resource. Serve as a primary liaison to the college in creating and maintaining an inclusive and equitable campus environment for students who are serviced through the office (academic, residential, co-curricular, social), and foster community through intersectional approaches.

Supervision
This position provides guidance, direction and supervision to the Associate Director and Assistant Director of the BIPOC Unity Center, and provides some guidance and direction to the Administrative Coordinator assigned to support the Student Equity, Inclusion and Belonging unit. This position reports to the Executive Director of Student Equity, Inclusion and Belonging, and is a member of the leadership team in Student Affairs and Campus Life. 

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Provide leadership and direction for the BIPOC Unity Center. Determine the scope and nature of the Center’s services and develop strategic plans. Direct involvement and guidance of the core branches of the BIPOC Unity Center, including the Ithaca Achievement Program (IAP), Martin Luther King Scholars Program (MLK Scholars), and the Ithaca First Generation Center (First Gen).
  2. Design, implement, and promote educational, cultural, and social programs and services offered through the BIPOC Unity Center that foster students’ academic success and personal growth and development. Develop and implement strategies to offer college-wide services to enhance the campus community’s understanding and appreciation of BIPOC and First Gen students, cultures and themes.
  3. Provide assistance to and advocacy for BIPOC and First Gen students through outreach programs, support, and community building. Create a program structure offering learning and engagement opportunities that increase awareness, equity, and inclusion, and foster community for BIPOC and First Gen students. Provide consultation regarding BIPOC and First Gen. themes to leadership of student organizations (Students of Color Coalition/BIPOC cultural and identity-based student organizations) and faculty/staff advisors of BIPOC and First Gen themed student organizations. 
  4. Plan, develop and launch ongoing assessments and program evaluations of student learning outcomes. Make necessary modifications to respond to changing student and college needs.
  5. Cultivate and lead alumni, parent/family, and community outreach efforts on behalf of the Center.
  6. Provide crisis intervention, management, support, and referral to appropriate campus and community resources. Serve as a resource on BIPOC student and First Gen student issues for the campus community including students, prospective students, staff, faculty, alumni, donors, and other campus and community programs as appropriate. As part of the role to support and advocate for our BIPOC student and First Gen communities, this position serves as a Title IX confidential resource for students, faculty and staff. 
  7. Support students who have experienced bias, discrimination or harassment, and assist them in understanding and navigating reporting options. Work in collaboration with College departments to develop and implement strategies to monitor and respond to issues and concerns affecting the quality of life for BIPOC and First Gen students and communities. 
  8. Oversee the recruitment, selection, training, and provide guidance, direction, and supervision to professional staff and student employees of the Center, and as opportunities arise, to interns, students in practicum placements, and professional staff in auxiliary placements in the Center. 
  9.  Develop and sustain successful collaborative initiatives, and partnerships with other offices to advocate for equity in educational spaces at the intersections of multiple minoritized identities. Collaborate with academic and student affairs offices such as the Center for Student Engagement and New Student & Transition Programs. Collaborate with Admission, Center for Student Success, and other campus partners in recruitment and retention efforts of BIPOC and First Gen students. In collaboration with the Center for Equity, Inclusion and Belonging, provide consultation and professional development for staff in offices such as Public Safety and Residential Life. Serve as a First Generation Forward representative for Ithaca College.
  10. Plan and coordinate college wide annual BIPOC student and First Gen themed events such as Jumpstart, MLK Week, Intercultural Career Panel/IC Voices, and the annual Senior Leadership Awards Ceremony.
  11. Lead the budget planning process for the Center and administer its annual budget. Prepare and submit budget recommendations; monitor, verify, and oversee reconciliation of expenditure of budgeted funds. Oversee the purchase and acquisition of capital equipment. Manage Center budget.
  12. Serve as a member of the Division of Student Affairs and Campus Life Leadership Team attending bi-weekly meetings and leadership team retreats. Assist in setting strategic goals for the division and support divisional assessment efforts. This position reports to Executive Director for Student Equity, Inclusion and Belonging, and collaborates with the offices under this umbrella.

Qualifications:

Required:
Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education administration, or other related field and a minimum of five years professional experience in student affairs, intercultural affairs, or a related area and:

  • previous experience in BIPOC student program development/student services at a college, university or community agency
  • demonstrated leadership experience, budget management skills, collaboration skills, strong written and verbal communication skills
  • extensive knowledge about ways systems of oppression impact students of racially minoritized groups in higher education, and the challenges and opportunities facing BIPOC and First Generation students in higher education
  • knowledge of and commitment educational equity and cultural humility, and working with students through an intersectional lens
  • experience creating and implementing successful, innovative, educational programming 
  • ability to engage effectively with diverse constituencies, including students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members
  • ability to take initiative, problem solve, exercise sound judgement, manage multiple priorities and work independently, with accuracy, attention to detail, and follow-through
  • ability to work evenings and weekends supporting campus events are required.

Preferred:

  • previous experience supervising and developing supervision of full-time staff 
  • experience with assessment and setting departmental goals

Work Environment:
Most of the work of the incumbent is carried out within a generally accessible, safe, indoor environment. The incumbent will be required to operate a personal computer and associated equipment as well as other office equipment used in day-to-day operations. The incumbent will be required to attend workshops, conferences and meetings on and off campus and during and after normal business hours and must be able to walk or drive or make alternative arrangements.

Hiring Range:
