POSITION: Assistant Director of Alumni Engagement

REPORTS TO: Chief Advancement Officer

STATUS: Full-time, Exempt

RANGE: $65,000.00 - $90,000.00

SUMMARY: Founded in 1901, Brooklyn Law School is a distinguished, independent law school located in Downtown Brooklyn, New York. The fundamental mission of Brooklyn Law School is to provide its students with a comprehensive legal education that gives them the knowledge, skills, and ethical values needed for a career in the law.

Reporting directly to the Chief Advancement Officer, the Assistant/Associate Director of Alumni Engagement will play a pivotal role in enhancing alumni and community involvement. Working closely with the Development, Marketing and Communications, and Events teams, the Director of Alumni Engagement will spearhead the creation of a dynamic engagement program aimed at fostering connections and involvement among students, alumni, faculty, and all constituents of the Brooklyn Law School community.

Responsibilities include:

  • Act as the primary point of contact for all alumni and affinity groups, managing communication channels such as alumni inbox and phone lines to ensure timely and effective engagement and support.
  • Create, plan, and implement strategic programs to increase the impact of Alumni Engagement.
  • Maximize the impact and involvement of Alumni volunteers through collaboration with the Advancement team, as well as the Brooklyn Law School Admissions and Career Services departments, student organizations, clinic, and center directors.
  • Maintain the alumni database and implement metrics to analyze current engagement efforts. Identify opportunities for efficiency and effectiveness based on best practices, and systematize data collection and dissemination to report on progress in increasing Alumni Engagement.
  • Support and manage engagement opportunities for all BLS alumni affinity groups including the Alumni Board, Women’s Leadership Circle, regional and industry alumni affinity groups, and student organizations to coordinate initiatives and events. Collaborate with Advancement team colleagues to encourage volunteer development and alumni-student networking.
  • Work closely with the team and the Chief Advancement Officer to develop programs and events for alumni, including working to enlarge the pipeline of donors and promote a culture of philanthropy.
  • Collaborate closely with the Marketing and Communications team to oversee and synchronize communication efforts for all alumni events and programs.
  • Partner closely with the Events team and staff to aid in organizing and staffing alumni and development events, spanning from intimate gatherings to large-scale galas.
  • Identify the needs and desires of Alumni in regional markets to cultivate and sustain alumni networks of donors and prospects to increase engagement through in-person interactions.
  • Model best practices for lifelong Alumni Engagement, guide the participation in the alumni life cycle, and advocate for greater involvement among students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

Qualifications:

  • One to three years of direct experience in Alumni Engagement or volunteer management, preferably within higher education; familiarity with law or other professional schools is advantageous but not mandatory. A bachelor’s degree is required, while an advanced degree is preferred.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in organizational management and business acumen, coupled with the ability to prioritize tasks and ensure meticulous attention to detail and accuracy. Experience with alumni databases and/or CRM systems, particularly Salesforce, is highly desirable.
  • Proven track record in designing, implementing, and executing successful Alumni Engagement strategies to bolster alumni participation and involvement, including working with regional and affinity alumni groups.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, enabling effective articulation of progress, concerns, and recommendations with diplomacy.
  • Capacity to swiftly acquire substantive knowledge of the Law School's clinics, centers, and affinity groups, and a commitment to translating these attributes into the philanthropic aspirations of new and existing alumni.
  • Demonstrated maturity, judgment, and respect necessary for intelligent engagement with partners across the School.
  • Experience in managing volunteers at all levels, including providing coaching and training to foster sustained alumni involvement.
  • Strong aptitude for relationship-building, characterized by active listening and the ability to identify shared interests between alumni and faculty/staff to develop compelling engagement strategies. Must exhibit an accessible and collegial leadership style.
  • Willingness to collaborate effectively with Advancement colleagues, as well as colleagues throughout the School, and engage with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
  • Patience, integrity, and the ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Availability and flexibility to engage in occasional overnight travel and attend events outside of regular working hours.
