Job description

Responsible for conducting Digital Forensic investigations related to criminal activity and performing various forensic examinations on digital media and multimedia devices. The Analyst works with a high level of responsibility and technical skill under limited supervision.
Research the forensic science field and scientific journal for new advances in computer forensic examination.

Conduct testing and validation of software and hardware used in examination of evidence.

Collaborate with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, such as the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Texas Department of Public Safety, to investigate crimes like Child Pornography, exploitation of children, Online Solicitation of children, and Child Sex trafficking.

Testify in court as an expert witness and handle sensitive evidence while maintaining its integrity and documenting the chain of custody.

Process digital evidence for murder cases and sexual assault.

Manage multiple projects (cases) and possess critical thinking abilities.

View and organize difficult-to-view images of exploited children and various victims

Become member of various Task Forces as deemed necessary

Maintain professional proficiency in forensic techniques, toolsets, computer/mobile system hardware, and software.

Conduct detailed forensic examinations and analyses of computers, hard drives, mobile devices, and digital media.

Recover deleted files, retrieve overt, hidden, and encrypted files, and provide technical support for ongoing criminal investigations.

The quality and competence of the Digital Forensics Analyst examinations and final analysis will often be the deciding factor in state and federal cases, determining whether the suspect(s) will be convicted and/or sentenced.

Create detailed reports for use by detectives, special agents, and Prosecutors for use in criminal cases in courts of law. These reports are often highly technical, detailed, and lengthy, documents.

Briefs assistant district attorneys on aspects of media analysis and explain technical details of reports.

Serves as subject matter expert on technical matters relating to digital evidence and testify in court or at hearings as an expert witness in Digital Forensics.

Attend search warrants at locations with digital evidence, providing proper collection procedures to ensure preservation, integrity, and the chain of custody of evidence.

Provide on-scene forensic review of evidence as required.

Review cases and prepare for testimony in pending court cases.

Provide expert testimony on forensic methods, media analysis, internet capabilities, social media, and e-mail.

When called upon these duties can keep the employee tied up for several days and even outside the city to other jurisdictions.

Attend training to maintain currency of qualifications, obtain information on updated forensic analysis methods and legal updates.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Technology, or related field.

  • One (1) year of related experience may be substituted for one (1) year of education.

Three (3) years' experience using complex software tools in a criminal justice environment.

Certifications, Licenses or Registrations:

Texas Driver License - Texas Department of Public Safety.

Certifications for current applications used in Digital Forensics examinations within two years of CFCE - Certified Forensic Computer Examiner by IACIS, CCME - Cellebrite Certified Mobile Examiner by Cellebrite).
Conduct password analysis/cracking, encryption methods, pattern analysis, planning equipment and software.

Conduct research of forensic science field and study current material in scientific journals regarding new advances and techniques in forensic examinations.

Interact with outside State and Federal Law Enforcement agencies, State and Federal prosecutors, and community groups.

Maintain full confidentiality concerning all information.

Utilize hardware, including computers, mobile devices, gaming systems, tablets, printers, write-blocking devices, hard drives, and USB Flash Drives.

Utilize software - Forensic Analysis (CelleBrite, Forensic Toolkit, Internet Evidence Finder, Password Recovery ToolKit, Database analysis)

Read and understand search warrants authorizing the examination of digital devices, technical manuals, software and hardware instructions for installation and maintenance, training manuals, legal and professional publications, review reports, and demonstrates understanding of procedures through examination of proficiency tests.

Create technical reports, reports of findings, police reports, procedural logs, chain of custody documentation, letters, and memos; properly report on examination results.

Understand and use base 2 (binary), base 8, base 10, base 16 numbering systems in digital analysis.

Requires considerable (90%+) work utilizing moderately high visual acuity/detail, numeric/character/color distinction, and moderate hand/finger dexterity.

Perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines.
