Job Summary:
The Diagnostic Imaging Specialist IV will serve as a key member of the Department of Ophthalmology patient care team. In this lead role, the Specialist IV will leverage expert technology and pathology knowledge to support ongoing training for all Diagnostic Imaging Specialists; provide mentorship, coaching, and guidance to members of the Diagnostic Imaging team; contribute to team quality, safety, and continuous improvement initiatives; manage inventory; and assist the supervisor with schedules, coverage, and other operational needs. In addition, the incumbent will perform all duties associated with acquisition, processing, submission for interpretation, and archiving of ophthalmic images and will be responsible for the care of the patient while in the imaging area.
Successful candidates will have at least 6 years' experience in an ophthalmology imaging setting and a certification in retinal angiography (CTA). The Specialist IV will have the ability to independently perform the full range of Diagnostic Imaging, including fundus photography, optical coherence tomography, corneal mapping, specular biomicroscopy, fluorescein angiography, ICG angiography, slit lamp photography, MPI, confocal imaging, ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM), and side and flatbed scanning, while demonstrating an aptitude for training others in both technical and service skills. In this role, the Specialist IV can expect to develop their leadership skills, further build their training experience, and learn about operational management of a technical, patient-centered team.
The Specialist IV will work closely with providers as well as with other clinical and administrative staff to deliver an exceptional patient experience that contributes to positive health outcomes for patients and a work culture of Service-Oriented, Trust, Empathy, Safety, Inclusion, and Communication.
Job Responsibilities:
Clinical Duties
  • Perform Diagnostic Imaging studies and examinations:
    • Review imaging requests for appropriateness based on clinical information provided. Review and respond to all imaging requests. When needed assess appropriateness based on clinical information provided. Bring questions on orders to supervisor and, at their discretion, the referring physician.
    • Position patient and select appropriate options to ensure best-case imaging.
    • Operate cameras, scanners, ultrasound biomicroscopes, and other imaging equipment to perform fundus photography, optical coherence tomography, corneal mapping, specular biomicroscopy, fluorescein angiography, ICG angiography, slit lamp photography, MPI, confocal imaging, ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM), and side and flatbed scanning.
    • Assist physicians in performance of minimally invasive and invasive fluoroscopic-guided diagnostic procedures. Under guidance and approval of the physician, calculate, measure, administer, and record contrast media received, used, and disposed, according to safety guidelines.
    • Observe patient while in the imaging area for change in status and make appropriate intervention or contact [supervisor or provider] for instruction.
    • Systematically and accurately enter patient data into imaging systems and transfer images to the PACS.
    • Judge diagnostic quality of finished medical images prior to submission to ophthalmologist for interpretation.
  • Operate and maintain equipment on a daily basis, maintaining logbooks with equipment performance data: schedule PM, perform QA, maintain records required for and participate in inspections. Perform machine and dose calibrator equipment quality checks daily, quarterly, and annually, and troubleshoot problems. Call for service and notify all pertinent team members. Maintain lead vests at all sites and perform annual testing to ensure that they meet quality standards.
  • Processing, sterilizing, and organizing instruments daily.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Patient Experience
  • Greeting and interacting with patients, caregivers, visitors, and colleagues.
  • Performing clerical responsibilities associated with the acquisition, processing, and archiving of patient records: ensure that patients have completed the screening process; schedule and arrive procedures in Epic and other systems as needed; perform any additional data entry as needed.
  • Facilitating rooming of patients.
  • Offering detailed explanations of pre- and post-visit processes and diagnostic procedures to patients and answering questions as appropriate, including via pre-procedure and post-procedure calls.

Leadership Duties
  • Serve as a team point person and/or backup to supervisor when tasked. Assist supervisor/manager with management of daily staffing schedules, coverage, and related issues.
  • Serve as the first point of escalation for complex cases or scheduling issues.
  • Leverage expert technology and pathology knowledge to support ongoing training for Diagnostic Imaging Specialists at all levels. Serve as a preceptor, guide and support other Specialists in training efforts, and act as a mentor for all other levels. Provide coaching and guidance to support the development of team members, facilitate team collaboration, and create a culture of mutual support. Collaborate with supervisor/manager to support the development and assessment of training offerings.
  • Mentor Diagnostic Imaging Specialists in individual and team accountability.
  • Collaborate with supervisor/manager on quality control and assurance measures. Lead day-to-day QC activities and delegate as appropriate. Lead and collaborate on quality-related projects. Facilitate or participate in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care. Perform testing and auditing as appropriate.
  • Act as Safety Champion for the group. Increase transparency, encourage event reporting, and advance the safety culture by facilitating safety huddles, patient safety activities, culture reinforcement, and shared learning.
  • Support supervisor/manager on development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • Collaborate with supervisor/manager on preparation for inspections.
  • Manage inventory for Diagnostic Imaging team, ensuring that locations have adequate supplies.
  • Support supervisor/manager on communication of organizational initiatives and changes.
  • Assist supervisor/manager with special projects, using data and system reports to identify trends, troubleshoot, and supervise specific tasks as determined by the supervisor/manager. Collaborate with practice staff to manage visitor flow to practice and resolve any visitor experience issues.
  • Communicate in a timely manner with patients and practice team members through the Electronic Health System (EHS) to ensure effective coordination of care.
  • Contribute ideas for improving practice workflows to team members, providers, and management.

Job Qualifications:
  • High school graduate and a minimum of 6 years' ophthalmology experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must include experience providing training in Diagnostic Imaging.
  • Advanced proficiency in the full range of ophthalmic imaging techniques, such as fundus photography, optical coherence tomography, corneal mapping, specular biomicroscopy, fluorescein angiography, ICG angiography, slit lamp photography, MPI, confocal imaging, ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM), and side and flatbed scanning.
  • Proven record of using independent judgment to handle complex cases; ability to perform with minimal supervision.
  • Leadership, mentorship, training, and coaching skills, including the ability to teach Diagnostic Imaging techniques and best practices; guide and coach others through complex cases, technical troubleshooting, and patient experience challenges; foster a team culture of accountability, respect, and continuous improvement; and orient others to team norms and team processes. Model a team orientation, demonstrating collaboration, inclusion, reliability, punctuality, and adaptability to new and changing situations. Ability to help others adapt to change.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to interact positively and constructively with patients, visitors, providers, and colleagues, demonstrating tact, empathy, and respect. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, verbally and in writing. Ability to model and teach effective communication to others.
  • Strong service orientation. Ability to consistently deliver exceptional, inclusive service and apply emotional intelligence skills to deescalate stressful situations. Ability to mentor and train others around service and de-escalation.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, including the ability to prioritize, multitask, and work independently with consistent follow-through across cases of varying complexities.
  • Proficiency in computer skills including, but not limited to, Electronic Health Systems, Microsoft Office, email, etc. Ability and willingness to learn new systems and programs.
  • Will provide coverage as requested throughout practices (multiple sites and flexible schedule).
  • B.S. in Biomedical Photography preferred.
  • Certified Retinal Angiographer (CRA) preferred.
  • OTC-C certification (Certified Optical Coherence Tomographer) preferred.
  • Certification and imaging experience for clinical research studies highly desirable.
  • CPR certified preferred.
  • Multi-specialty experience in a high-volume setting preferred.
  • Prior EMR experience, Epic preferred.

Hourly Rate Ranges: $38.46 - $46.63
Note: Our salary offers will fall within these ranges based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to experience, skill set, training and education.
