Job Summary:

The Diagnostic Imaging Specialist II will serve as a key member of the Department of Ophthalmology patient care team. In this role, the incumbent will perform all duties associated with acquisition, processing, submission for interpretation, and archiving of ophthalmic images and will be responsible for the care of the patient while in the imaging area.

Successful candidates will have at least 2 years’ experience in an ophthalmology imaging setting with an ability to independently perform fundus photography, optical coherence tomography, corneal mapping, specular biomicroscopy, and flatbed scanning, while demonstrating a strong service orientation and an ability to learn new technical skills. In this role, the Specialist II can expect to refine their skills in fluorescein angiography, ICG angiography, slit lamp photography, MPI, confocal imaging, and side scanning, as well as to contribute to the development of new Specialists.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Perform Diagnostic Imaging studies and examinations according to practice standards:
    • Review imaging requests for appropriateness based on clinical information provided. Review and respond to all imaging requests.
    • Position patient and select appropriate options to ensure best-case imaging.
    • Operate cameras, scanners, and other imaging equipment to perform fundus photography, optical coherence tomography, corneal mapping, specular biomicroscopy, fluorescein angiography, ICG angiography, slit lamp photography, MPI, confocal imaging, and side and flatbed scanning.
    • Observe patient while in the imaging area for change in status and make appropriate intervention or contact supervisor for instruction.
    • Systematically and accurately, enter patient data into imaging systems and transfer images to the PACS.
    • Judge diagnostic quality of finished medical images prior to submission to ophthalmologist for interpretation.
  • Operate and maintain equipment on a daily basis, maintaining logbooks with equipment performance data: schedule PM, perform QA, maintain records required for and participate in inspections.
  • Processing, sterilizing, and organizing instruments daily.
  • Performing clerical responsibilities associated with the acquisition, processing, and archiving of patient records: ensure that patients have completed the screening process; schedule and arrive procedures in Epic and other systems as needed; perform any additional data entry as needed.
  • Offering detailed explanations of pre- and post-visit processes and diagnostic procedures to patients and answering questions as appropriate, including via pre-procedure and post-procedure calls.
  • Assist with onboarding and training of new staff.
  • Serve as the first point of escalation for complex cases or scheduling issues.
  • Assist supervisor/manager with special projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications:

  • High school graduate and a minimum of 2 years’ ophthalmology experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience; B.S. in Biomedical Photography preferred.
  • Ability to independently perform a range of ophthalmic imaging techniques, especially fundus photography, optical coherence tomography, corneal mapping, specular biomicroscopy, and flatbed scanning. Familiarity with and interest in expanding skills in fluorescein angiography, ICG angiography, slit lamp photography, MPI, confocal imaging, and side scanning.
  • Certification and imaging experience for clinical research studies required.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, verbally and in writing. Ability to model effective communication to others.
  • Strong service orientation. Ability to mentor others around service and de-escalation.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, including the ability to prioritize, multitask, and work independently with consistent follow-through. Ability to manage complex cases.
  • Ability to orient others to team norms and team processes.
  • Proficiency in computer skills including, but not limited to, Electronic Health Systems, Microsoft Office, email, etc. Ability and willingness to learn new systems and programs.
  • Will provide coverage as requested throughout practices (multiple sites and flexible schedule).
  • OTC-C certification (Certified Optical Coherence Tomographer) preferred.
  • CPR certified preferred.
  • Multi-specialty experience in a high-volume setting preferred.
  • Prior EMR experience, Epic preferred.

Hourly Rate Ranges: $28.85 - $34.62

Note: Our salary offers will fall within these ranges based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to experience, skill set, training and education.
