Job description

The Massachusetts Department of Fish & Game works to preserve the state's natural resources and people's right to conservation of those resources, as protected by Article 97 of the Massachusetts Constitution. To carry out this mission, the Department exercises responsibility over the Commonwealth's marine and freshwater fisheries, wildlife species, plants, and natural communities, as well as the habitats that support them.

The Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries serves Massachusetts' citizens by protecting, restoring, and enhancing fishery resources and their habitats, while providing sustainable fisheries related recreational and commercial opportunities.

The Department of Fish and Game, Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) seeks applicants for the position of Aquatic Biologist II to work within the Diadromous Fish Project to assist in Diadromous Fisheries management through research, monitoring and restoration of fish populations, passageways and habitat. Under supervision of the project leader, the incumbent designs and conducts investigations of diadromous life history, fish population indices and dynamics and conducts habitat monitoring, restoration projects and fish passage improvements. This position works with the New Bedford Fishway Crew staff to design, develop and execute diadromous fish passage projects in coastal Massachusetts watersheds. 

DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Participate in all seasonal activities of the DMF Fishway Crew stationed in New Bedford. 
  2. Conduct routine field investigations on the status of diadromous fish passageways in coastal Massachusetts watersheds to identify passage deficiencies and initiate remediation.
  3. Assist the design, development and execution of diadromous fish projects in coastal Massachusetts. This includes field development, communications with Towns and property owners, fishway designs, permitting, contracting and construction.    
  4. Supervision of seasonal employees that assist with monitoring and construction projects.  
  5. Participate in diadromous fish monitoring, including fabrication and installation of custom monitoring stations.
  6. Specific assignments will be made to lead diadromous monitoring stations. This includes responsibility for installation, maintenance and data processing for individual stations. 
  7. Participate with river herring monitoring, management and habitat improvements (spawning, nursery and migratory). Includes river herring stocking and the operation and maintenance of project stocking trucks, pumps, boats and trailers.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE (List knowledges, skills, abilities):

  1. Knowledge and/or previous work in diadromous fish passage, restoration, and biology.
  2. Knowledge and experience in carpentry, and some fabrication experience with either wood, concrete or aluminum fabrication.
  3. Knowledge and experience with small gas and electric engines, and some experience with either welding, electric fish monitoring station, or water pumps.
  4. Proven ability to work independently with little supervision.
  5. Experience with design and maintenance of field fish monitoring applications.
  6. Ability to speak effectively at public and technical meetings and to prepare clear and concise written technical reports.
  7. Ability to work collaboratively with other staff, contractors, government agencies, and the public. 
  8. Knowledge of fisheries ecology, with emphasis on diadromous fishes. 
  9. Knowledge of sampling design and techniques, and statistical analysis.

QUALIFICATIONS ACQUIRED ON JOB (List knowledges, skills, abilities):

  1. Enhanced ability to develop, design and execute diadromous fish passage improvement projects.
  2. Enhanced understanding and capacity to work with water flow dynamics, and concrete, wood and aluminum fabrications related to diadromous fish passage.

Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional, para-professional or technical experience in marine biology or fisheries management work, of which (B) at least one year must have been in a professional capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions:
I. A Bachelor's degree with a major in marine, fisheries or wildlife biology; fisheries or wildlife management; marine science or oceanography may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience on the basis of two years of education for one year of experience.* II. A Graduate degree with a major in marine, fisheries or, fisheries or wildlife biology; fisheries or wildlife management; marine science or oceanography may be substituted for one year of the required (A) experience on the basis of two years of education for one year of experience.*
*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
