Job Title: Diabetes Prevention Program Coach

Job Location: Cooper Street YMCA

FLSA Status: Nonexempt; Part-Time


Reports to: Evidence-Based Program Coordinator


POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Diabetes Prevention Coach at the Arlington-Mansfield Area YMCA serves others by intentionally welcoming, connecting, and supporting them and inviting them to get involved and give back to the community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Creates a safe environment in which all individuals feel welcomed and respected; builds relationships with and among members and program participants.
  2. Delivers DPP curriculum to participants in a safe, effective, and compelling way.
  3. Encourages group participation and interaction through the use of open-ended questions.
  4. Creates a motivating environment that is friendly and non-competitive and facilitates commitment and retention of participants.
  5. Supports and encourages participants' goal setting on a weekly basis.
  6. Provides accessibility to participants before and after class to answer questions; displays empathy in support of helping program participants build confidence to achieve their health and wellness goals.
  7. Fosters relationships with and between program participants.
  8. Prepares for each class (reviews participants' food and activity trackers, studies lesson plan content for the class, calls or sends reminders to class participants, etc....).
  9. Follows up with participants outside of regular class time if they are unable to attend the class and provides in-person make-up session opportunities.
  10. Identifies and celebrates the successes of members and program participants.
  11. Keeps accurate records of participants' weekly attendance, body weight, total weekly physical activity totals, etc....).
  12. Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations.
  13. Participates in DPP Coach team discussions and meetings. Offers ideas and tools for facilitation and remains engaged with the DPP team.
  14. All other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age; high school diploma or GED required.
  • Knowledge of basic health, nutrition, and fitness. Related degree or relevant experience preferred.
  • Obtain and remain compliant with all certifications and standards assigned by YMCA of the USA and the AMA YMCA.
  • Must have strong written and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to have empathy for health seekers.
  • Familiarity and proficiency with listening and motivational interviewing and an understanding of behavior changes required is a plus.
  • Flexible work schedule, including evenings and weekends is a plus.
  • Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
  • Commitment to inclusion and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • CPR/AED/O2/First Aid certifications and Child Abuses Prevention, Anti-Harassment, Blood Borne Pathogens, Hazard Communication Awareness, and Slips, Trips, and Falls trainings required within 30 days of hire.
