Job description

Performs a variety of routine and complex duties in overseeing the computer operations, data entry, and record keeping functions for the Detention Center as they apply to inmate records.

Working conditions include regular exposure to dangerous and /or hazardous situations, continuous noises, bright lights, contagious diseases, humid surroundings, extreme hot or cold temperatures, dust and odors.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Comprehensive knowledge of:

  • The operation of standard office equipment

Considerable knowledge of:

  • Knowledge of the applicable laws, ordinances and department rules and regulations;; ability to maintain effective working relationships with peers and superiors; ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Emergency plans and procedures.
  • Support services and their respective function.

Ability to:

  • Act quickly and calmly in emergency or dangerous situations.
  • Deal courteously but firmly with inmates, visitors and others often under contentious circumstances.
  • Make decisions recognizing established precedents and practices and to use resourcefulness and tact in meeting new problems.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, general public, courts, attorneys and other related officials.
  • Maintain complete and accurate records.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Necessary Special & Physical Requirements

  • Must be a United States Citizen.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Completion of high school or GED.
  • Subject to shift work, extended duty hours, twenty-four hour call-back, holiday and weekend duty.
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony or serous misdemeanor
  • Subject to an extensive background check.
  • Subject to random drug and alcohol testing and polygraph examination during employment
  • May be required to possess a valid driver’s license
  • Must be able to operate County government equipment and vehicles in a safe, prudent and responsible manner.
  • All position requires drug testing before employment and will require a pre-employment physical.
  • Pursuant to the Drug Free Workplace Act of 1988, all employees must remain drug and alcohol free when reporting to work, while at work and while engaged in any work related activities.
  • Based on Federal Regulation 19-10 all positions in this classification are eligible for and will be offered hepatitis vaccinations. In addition, employees will be required to sign a statement stating they have accepted or declined the hepatitis vaccination.

Example of Duties

Administrative:


  • Performs data entry and record keeping functions of the Detention Center as they apply to inmate records
  • Maintains accurate records of persons arrested, booked, and incarcerated in the Detention Center
  • Calculates inmate release dates; maintains and updates court and sentencing records of inmates
  • Inputs arrest and booking information into computer
  • Maintains and updates inmate classifications as they pertain to court status
  • Maintains and updates court and sentencing records of inmates
  • Writes bonds, logs bond amounts, write citations as necessary, logs inmate property
  • Books and releases inmates; processes necessary paperwork in the booking and releasing of inmates
  • Answers telephones
  • Performs warrant checks prior to release of inmate

Intake/Processing:

  • Ensures accurate processing of court orders, directives or other judicial action
  • Enters, processes and verifies information required of the various inmate management and information systems.
  • Determines which inmates are required to go to court; notifies appropriate personnel; ensures inmate is dressed appropriately for court.
  • Monitors and ensures the accuracy and operation of the facility equipment.
  • Process property and/or funds that are received for inmates, checks for contraband and fills out required paperwork.
  • Coordinates the exchange and transfer of data with court system and other agencies.

Public Contact:

  • Responds as appropriate to inquiries from other agencies, the media, officials and /or the general public.
  • Acts as liaison with other agencies of the justice system in the exchange of inmate data and other official documentation.

Miscellaneous:

  • May be assigned to perform duties of higher or lower level classifications in this or related class series and/or perform duties on a temporary or acting basis.
  • Responsible for knowing and complying with all Kenton Count and Detention Center safety rules.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
