Role Summary
Sherwood is currently seeking an Urban Designer to support a growing Planning practice within a progressive and dynamic civil engineering firm. The successful candidate will work as an integral part of Sherwood’s Planning team, collaborate with engineering disciplines to integrate engineering solutions into planning and urban design studies, large scale mixed-use / development master plans, public spaces, and large land development projects. This candidate will be asked to produce compelling graphic content that advances planning and engineering for projects, deliverables, client proposals, and competitions.
We are seeking a creative individual who demonstrates a professional skill set in planning and urban design, can work productively as a member of a multidisciplinary team, work independently with sophisticated design software applications, and develop clear narratives and supporting graphic content to convey and visualize design ideas for mixed-use development master plans, resiliency strategies, climate adaptation plans, landscape and ecological design, and districtwide urban infrastructure systems.
Minimum Skills
Typically 1+ years of professional experience
Undergraduate degree in Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, or Architecture
Strong proficiency in Rhino, AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, and ArcGIS
Interest in and passion for cities, land use, urban design, landscape, resiliency, and ecology
Demonstrated understanding of planning and urban design concepts, building typologies, standard dimensions, urban infrastructure systems, zoning controls, and implementation strategies
Proficiency and experience in the development of high-quality 2D and 3D diagrams, axonometrics, site plans, cross-sections, elevations, and perspective renderings, as well as a demonstrated capacity to introduce new and compelling ways to visually convey ideas
Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills for working within an overall design team environment on multiple projects
Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, multi-task, work independently under general supervision, and exhibit proactivity and good judgment
Ability to read and interpret written information including project and design documents and drawings, and email correspondence
Preferred Skills
Masters degree in Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, or Architecture
Experience in a consulting environment
ASLA, AICP, AIA, and/or LEED AP certification
Experience preparing content and narrative for proposals and design competitions
Experience in parametric modeling, including Grasshopper, and BIM modeling
Expected Outcomes
Actively participate as a member of Sherwood’s Planning team and demonstrate highly disciplined work ethic
Develop and advance large-scale mixed use development master planning projects, urban design studies, landscape studies, ecological design ideas, planning frameworks
Conduct and document research, precedents, and benchmarks; prepare urban design and streetscape design guidelines; and generate high quality and elegant graphic content for a wide variety of geographic scales, conditions, and built and natural contexts
Ideate independently and as part of a team, visually representing conceptual design ideas and complex urban systems, and advancing production of work product in a fast-moving consulting environment
Quickly translate urban, landscape, and ecological stories and solutions into clear concise graphics and narratives through the proficient use of technical and visualization design software
