This pool is for assignments for the 2024/2025 school year.
Please note that on 9/28/2021, the Board of Education mandated the COVID-19 vaccination as a requirement for employment.
The San Diego Unified School District accepts applications for Designated Subject Teachers (Secondary Level) on a continuous basis for regular full-time and part-time assignments. This is a continuous recruitment which will be used to establish an ongoing eligibility list for secondary schools. Candidates that do not wish to be considered for regular full-time/part-time positions should apply to the substitute Teacher Pool to be considered for temporary assignments.
The Designated Subject Teacher Pool is for individuals who hold a Designated Subjects credential or who are eligible for a Designated Subjects credential and wish to teach a Career Technical Education course at a secondary school.
If you have not applied for a California teaching credential, please remember that as of January 1, 2017, you must hold a Certificate of Clearance prior to applying for your credential. Visit the CCTC website for more information.
Examples of Duties
A Designated Subject Teacher develops and implements lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of the district's curriculum program. The duties of this position include but are not limited to the following:
  • Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Board of Education and administrative regulations.
  • Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in student learning styles.
  • Encourage pupils to think independently and to express original ideas.
  • Create classroom environments conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social and emotional development of students.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials and equipment, including instructional media.
  • Assess student progress on objectives, expectations, and/or goals and provide feedback to students, parents, and administration.

Minimum Qualifications
Credential Requirements
  • A valid teaching credential in a specific industry sector.
  • Candidates eligible for a Designated Subjects credential may be considered. Please reference the State of California Commission on Teacher Credentialing website for details (click here to view).

Education
A Bachelor's Degree with a major in the subject named on the credential.
Experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge, interest and specialized experience in the field such as research and professional activities is desirable.
  • Three years of experience working with pupils at the Secondary Level is desired.

  • A copy of written reference letters within the last two years is desirable

The supplemental questions should be answered thoroughly, clearly and concisely as the responses provided (along with the entire application package) will be carefully reviewed to determine which candidates will move forward in the recruitment process. The length of time you worked in each position or assignment must be clearly shown. The examination process will consist of an application screening based on the candidate's education, work history and responses to the supplemental questions. Professional References will be contacted for candidates that are selected to proceed in the examination process. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. Candidates selected to proceed in the examination process will be invited to an interview. Applicants who pass the examination process will be placed on an eligible list for a period of one year. The eligible list will be used to fill vacancies at various school sites.
