DEPUTY SHERIFF ENTRY LEVEL
The Prince George's County Office of the Sheriff is seeking men and women who exhibit good character, sound judgment, honesty, reliability, integrity, and the desire to serve the community to be considered for the position of Deputy Sheriff Private, grade W21, for current and future vacancies.

Incumbents typically perform general law enforcement and investigations controlling and serving warrants and /or extraditing persons wanted on criminal warrants. Duties include transporting prisoners to and from various institutions and courts throughout the State of Maryland and the United States. Serving civil processes/summonses; executing writs/court orders, maintaining security in the courtrooms of the Circuit Courts; monitoring prisoners in holding areas, writing reports, and providing effective and efficient services to the citizens of Prince George's County.

Shift work (which includes weekends and holidays), is required.
  • U.S. Citizen
  • High School graduate; (60+ college credit hours preferred)
  • You may apply at 20 years and 6 months and be 21 years old at time of graduation from the Police Academy.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and at least 6 months driving experience
  • Pass all of the qualification factors listed in the Additional Information.

To be considered for this Class, Applicants must successfully complete all of the following steps:

  3. Download and complete the Doctor's Waiver to participate in the A.P.R.T (will not be able to participate in the A.P.R.T without a signed waiver).
  4. Request an A.P.R.T.
  5. Pass A.P.R.T (eligible to take written exam upon successfully passing A.P.R.T)
  6. Pass the Written Examination
  7. Preliminary Documents and Records Check
  8. Downloading and completing the Personal History Statement.

  1. Initial Interview (Submit PHS & requested supporting documents).
  2. Background Investigation
  3. Oral Board Interview
  4. Polygraph Examination
  5. Psychological Screening
  6. Medical Examination & Drug Screening
  7. Hiring Consideration
  8. Final Offer of Employment
  9. Retake and Pass A.P.R.T (no exceptions)
  10. Graduation from the Prince George's County Police Academy
