ResponsibilitiesThe Deputy Chief of Police, reporting to the Chief of University Police, is responsible for providing strategic leadership and overseeing various critical functions within the University Police Department. This leadership role is integral to ensuring the safety and security of the university community, as well as maintaining high standards of professional conduct and accountability. In the absence of the Chief of Police, the Deputy Chief assumes command and control of police operations and functions. This position is designated as Essential Personnel and may be required to work nights, holidays, and weekends.
- Oversight of Investigations: Supervise and lead investigative efforts; including crime scene investigation, major incidents, criminal cases, and internal affairs investigations. Ensure compliance with legal requirements and departmental policies during investigations, and case management. Collaborate with internal and external agencies as necessary to foster strong working relationships. Provides oversight to the property and evidence function, ensuring integrity, security, policies and procedures reflect best practices.
- Recruitment and Personnel Management: Lead the recruitment and selection process for new officers, ensuring the department attracts qualified and diverse candidates. Oversee personnel management, including promotions, transfers, and disciplinary actions. Completes employee performance evaluations. Develop and implement professional development plans for staff.
- Accreditation and Compliance: Oversee and ensure compliance with national and regional accreditation standards. Preparation and maintenance documentation for accreditation processes. Continuously improve departmental policies and procedures to meet accreditation standards.
- Training and Professional Development: Develop and execute comprehensive training programs for departmental personnel. Remain current with law enforcement best practices and industry standards. Promote a culture of continuous learning and professional growth.
- Police Intelligence and Threat Assessment: Oversee and manage departmental intelligence personnel and data analysis to identify potential threats to the safety of the campus. Collaborate with other law enforcement agencies and campus stakeholders to assess and mitigate risks. Implement strategies for campus wide threat assessment and response.
- Other duties as assigned which may include: patrol shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, university closure, etc.
Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public administration, or a related field; or a high school diploma/equivalency and eight years of related experience. (Note: a combination of post-high school education and experience equal to eight years in the same.)
Knowledge of and the ability to apply the principles and practices to strategically align tasks and people with organizational goals and objectives.
Ability to develop and implement policies, procedures, goals, and objectives.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Ability to evaluate process effectiveness and develop change or alternatives.
Ability to gather, interpret, report, and/or edit information.
Ability to maintain and improve personal and team effectiveness, and foster change and creativity.
Ability to represent the University in the appointed area as required.
Ability to utilize problem-solving skills.
Ability to interpret and apply related University policies, procedures, principles, and practices.
A valid State of Florida or Georgia driver's license or the ability to obtain prior to hire..
Master's degree preferred.
