Job Responsibilities
York Technical College, a member of the South Carolina Technical and Comprehensive Education System, is a public, two-year institution of higher education that offers a variety of associate degrees, diplomas, and certificates. Through maximizing student success, the College seeks to contribute to the economic growth and development of York, Lancaster, and Chester counties and of the State.
The Department Chair for Engineering Technology performs the following functions:
  • The Department Chair provides leadership to: plan and pursue the strategic and operational goals of the department and ensure quality programs and services to promote student success; implement the instructional, administrative and fiscal functions of the department; implement curriculum development and new program planning; recruit, develop, mentor, and evaluate faculty and staff to meet the needs of the department and support student success initiatives; plan and monitor departmental budgets, special projects, and capital equipment needs; develop and submit department needs/requests/proposals using input from Program Coordinators, faculty, staff, students, advisory committees, DACUM panels, accreditation agencies, etc.; ensures compliance with College, State and regional/professional association accreditation guidelines; prepare and submit necessary reports and documentation to maintain effective operation of the program; set goals and monitor program enrollment, retention, placement, student learning outcomes, and institutional effectiveness outcomes; document and use results for continuous improvement of the department's programs and services; plan effective advising, orientation, and course scheduling for students in the department; actively participate and positively represent the department and the College on internal and external committees; in partnerships with business/industry, government, public education, and other higher education institutions; and in the general community.
  • Teaching Performance: Provides students with course syllabus, grading/attendance policy, and other relevant information in timely manner; relates instructional materials, discussions, and other course activities to course objectives; demonstrates effective interaction skills; uses practical examples and illustrations; paces the instruction over the semester; provides students with assessments and returning assessment results in timely manner; relating assessments to course objectives; follows acceptable Department and College grading policies; utilizes appropriate instructional technology; maintains a positive environment for optimum student performance.
  • Student Advisement: Accessible at scheduled times for academic advising appointments each semester; utilizes the available data about students' academic performance and needs; recommends appropriate entry-level courses based on available information; assists students in developing an educational plan consistent with life goals and objectives (alternate courses of action, alternate career considerations, and selection of courses); participates willingly and actively in advisor training programs; provides accurate information about institutional policies, procedures, and programs; increases student awareness of College resources available and making referrals to other institutional support services where applicable; and uses discretion in dealing with confidential information.
  • Instructional Development: Develops/selects, and maintains all course syllabi, documentation, textbooks, materials, supplies/equipment; revises and/or designs traditional and/or alternate delivery courses and programs using a competency-based, modular format; keeps abreast of and makes appropriate use of educational technology; maintains audio-visual and/or other materials for courses taught; schedules class and lab time effectively.
  • Instructional Management: Submits reports in timely manner; practices effective classroom management techniques; prioritizes duties and uses time wisely; adheres to class schedules; provides effective classroom/lab supervision; maintains accurate records; handles students' work and records in professional manner; provides disciplinary action where appropriate; performs other duties as required.
  • Professional Development: Develops an annual professional development plan in conjunction with supervisor; attends courses/seminars/workshops as required or planned; writes manuscripts or presenting papers at conferences, etc.; doing research projects in subject field; keeps updated with current knowledge in teaching field.
  • College and/or Community Service: Assists with recruitment as required; assists with job/transfer placement and timely completion of associated documentation; participates in the IE process through cooperation with or participation in projects/activities in instructional and support areas in fulfillment of the College's mission and institutional effectiveness process; provides college and/or community service as related to College mission and goals; serves effectively on college/community committees.

Minimum and Additional Requirements
Master's degree and 18 graduate hours in related subject field. Master of Science in mechanical engineering with at least one year of practical industry experience strongly preferred. At least three years of practical industry experience highly desired. Prior teaching experience in an ABET accredited program is also preferred. Valid Professional Engineering (PE) certification is desired.

  • Ability to think critically to carry out essential functions of the position.
  • Tact and resourcefulness in dealing with confidential and sensitive issues.
  • Ability to manage and coordinate a variety of tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and evenings as needed.
  • Ability to travel within the service areas.
