To provide effective demonstration, safety, operation and application training to customers, dealers, internal personnel and varied audiences which support and promote the sale of Caterpillar products and services. The product demonstrator / instructor is the key producer to deliver an outstanding experience for all equipment related programs at the demonstration and Learning Centers, dealer locations and customer job sites.
JOB DUTIES:
Incumbent will conduct product demonstrations and narration from the cab, as well as safety, operation and application training, which display a proven set of operating/application skills, product knowledge and practical experience, usually limited to certification on 4 machine families in selected product types and applications. These duties require an incumbent possess a minimum of 10 years of operator experience in heavy construction, quarry/aggregates and or mining industries. With seasoning, incumbent gains broad operation skill, application expertise and ability to employ a wide range of demonstration, evaluation, analytical and communication techniques and tools.

  • Demonstration of Product: Operate equipment in 1 to 2 product demo sequences and narrate from the cab to demonstrate features and capabilities, communicate operating techniques, display effective application and safety practices, and demonstrate the various technologies available on our products such as Cat Grade Control, VIMS, Product Link and the HEX Hybrid system. Demonstrations are conducted at the Demonstration and Learning Centers or off-site locations worldwide. Responsibilities include participating as a design team member and conducting product demonstrations. Sound knowledge and skill of incumbents address customer questions and concerns. With experience, incumbents are expected to master demonstration techniques and fine points of the product, thereby becoming an integral part of the selling team.

  • Product and Application Training: In selected situations where experience allows, provides hands-on training related to machine operation, application, job efficiency, and safety, at the Demonstration and Learning Centers or offsite locations. Before progressing to the Product Demonstrator/Instructor Level 2, incumbent must have the ability to certify on all core Caterpillar machines to the standards set by the Equipment Training Solutions team to provide training and certification to dealer and customer operators. Incumbent will train and participate in the certification process for dealer demonstrator instructors to the level of Certified Dealer Instructors. Conducts Level I, Level II and Level III operator training sessions in support of Equipment Training Solutions standards. Provide faculty support to the Machine Application Performance Seminars for external and internal sales personnel. These duties contribute to company revenues through sales of new products and services and enrollment in the program. Warranty expense may also be reduced by these efforts. Incumbents provide subject matter expertise to the Equipment Training Solutions Curriculum Developers to ensure the materials are up to date for all product families. Provide Subject Matter Expertise to the development, evaluation and promotion of the Virtual Training Simulators.

  • Product and Job Site Evaluation/Recommendations: Where experience allows, evaluate customer jobs to help maximize job site efficiency, machine application and operation, machine selection and configuration, safety of operations, etc. Recommend modifications and improvements which result in superior product performance, producing greater return to the customer and resulting in machine sales. Evaluate preproduction and current product and perform comparative analysis of competitive product as part of NPI cycle. Provides Voice of the Customer input by communicating with appropriate business units concerning product performance and recommendations for improvement.

  • Production Analysis Team: Incumbent conducts job studies on all models of Caterpillar and competitive product at various job sites. Studies determine productivity using electronic payload weighing, cycle timing, and fuel consumption of equipment. Data acquired is compiled, analyzed and presented to customer or business unit using proprietary PC programs. Incumbent must hold or be able to obtain a Commercial Driver License or equivalent as required by local regulations in their respective work country/region to operate the Production Analysis Truck on public roadways.

  • Sales Support: Provides Subject Matter Expertise (SME) to dealer sales force and Caterpillar Field Reps during dealer sales training events at the Demonstration and Learning Centers, as well as dealer and customer locations abroad. Provides support to potential customer purchases, both on and off site, with machine viewing and operation sessions. Incumbent is an integral part of these visits by providing an in-depth perspective of the machines capabilities, features and benefits which are relevant to the customer’s application. Supports Industry Trade Shows and New Machine Deliveries in order to strengthen relationships between Caterpillar dealers and customers and increase awareness of the services available.

  • Promote and Support Demonstration and Learning Centers: Supports division's business plan by selling services and containing period costs. Manages/maintains a product family or families within the demonstration fleet, works with business units regarding the recommended replacement of models and consist of order to ensure that the fleet meets the product and promotion needs of Cat industry groups and dealers. Develops and maintains demonstration areas to best display product capabilities, features, benefits and technology solutions. Accountable for the safety of all Demonstration and Learning Center visitors and staff on site.

  • Additional required responsibilities: Incumbent must be able to travel domestic and international 50% on an annual basis. Expected to uphold the Caterpillar Safety Standards during all aspects of this job. Must possess the ability to communicate and work effectively with customers ranging from; laborers up to the CEO of the company. Must have the ability to communicate and work effectively with a range of internal business partners from; engineers to the CEO and Board of Directors. Incumbent will be working with the trade press and must possess a professional demeanor, both on and off camera. Accountable for the safety of personnel encountered during dealer and customer site visits. Must possess the ability to work effectively and train dealers and customers from various cultures.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Incumbent must possess a minimum of 10 years of operator experience in heavy construction, quarry/aggregates and or mining industries.

  • Requires sound knowledge of Caterpillar products and their application.

  • Incumbent must possess superior heavy equipment operating skills on at least four key product families

Top Candidates Will Also Have:

  • Demonstrate the ability to develop required skills on remaining product families as determined by Caterpillar Equipment Training Solutions standards.

  • Must possess strong human relation and communication skills, both written and verbal in order to diffuse high pressure and potentially hostile situations when instructing customers. Ability to professionally deliver presentations both in the classroom and the field is required, and the ability to win over potentially hostile audiences.

  • Fluency in English is required for US based facilities, with other languages desired.

  • Must have a basic working knowledge of computers and software packages or the ability to train and develop in this area. Common progression opportunity: Senior Product Demonstrator/Instructor.
