Job Description
The Dean of Students will serve as a senior member of the Leadership Team within Education Outreach and Student Services (EOSS). The Dean of Students assesses and produces comprehensive services for all students, assists with serving the urgent needs of students, families and the campus community, and promotes a vibrant student life experience fostering community through education and engagement. The Dean of Students serves as the senior Student Affairs Officer (SSAO) at the ASU Downtown Phoenix location, working collaboratively with Thunderbird School of Global Management, College of Health Solution, Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Sandra Day O'Conner College of Law, Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation, Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions, and future ASU School of Medicine and Advanced Medical Engineering academic leaders. Reports to a Deputy Vice President, Student Services.

Minimum Qualifications
Doctoral degree in higher education, public administration or related area and six (6) years related experience in higher education administration; OR, Master's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment and eight (8) years of related administrative experience, including five (5) years of supervisory experience; OR, Fourteen (14) years of related administrative experience, including five (5) years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved
Department Statement
Educational Outreach and Student Services (EOSS) is committed to enrolling all qualified students at Arizona State University and assisting them in their academic success. EOSS provides a broad range of services and support to students and prospective students ranging from outreach efforts with K-12 schools, new student experiences for students and families, bridge programs to assist the transition to a university environment, and a wide variety of services, programs and activities for enrolled students. EOSS has direct responsibility for multiple departments across four campuses, some of which include the Dean of Students, Student Rights and Responsibilities, University Housing, Health Services, Counseling Services, Student Accessibility and Inclusive Learning Services, the Unions and Centers, TRIO programs, Sun Devil Fitness & Wellness, Student Government, Student Media, Career Services, Access ASU and others.
Desired Qualifications
  • Evidence of a Doctorate in Education, Public Administration or related discipline, preferred.
  • Seven (7) years of progressive professional responsibilities in Student Affairs, higher education or education administration.
  • Five (5) years of supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of student and human development principles and practices.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of strategic planning principles and practices.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective strategies for mitigating and managing crisis situations.
  • Experience in analyzing and developing effective solutions for complex problems.

Essential Duties
  • Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with students and families from diverse backgrounds.
  • Manages complex situations with students and families to advance student success by coordinating appropriate response to such emergencies; responds to students in need of resources.
  • Advances student experiences to cultivate community, healthfulness, and skill building.
  • Attends student and institutional events and activities, including evenings and weekends.
  • Responds to and resolves after-hour and weekend incidents on campus.
  • Develops a strategic approach with Student Services, academic partners, and students the execution of activities that fulfill the student experience and enhances their participation in college life with the intent of increasing student persistence through graduation.
  • Collaborates with stakeholders (students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners) to provide educational experiences that develop community while fostering inclusion at the university.
  • Serves as a resource to faculty and staff on student behavioral issues in the classroom and workplace.
  • Provides leadership to support maintaining the safety of students and academic integrity of the university.
  • Collaborates with campus partners and City of Phoenix to maintain a safe and vibrant urban campus experience.
  • Works with highly sensitive and/or confidential information.
  • Collaborates with Admissions, ACCESS ASU and ASU Preparatory Academy on K-16 efforts.

  • Collects, analyzes, and reports data on strategies demonstrating outcomes of goals and objectives.
  • Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, coaches, supervises, and evaluates professional and student staff.
  • Provides leadership and guidance to the EOSS team at the downtown Phoenix location.
  • Responsible for budget development and oversight, review of fiscal accounts, and preparation of fiscal reports for all assigned areas.
  • Provides oversight for the development and implementation of inclusion curricula in collaboration with faculty, staff, and students advancing University charter.
  • Assists in University wide priorities, such as orientation, fall welcome, family programming, retention and other large-scale initiatives; facilitating continued student success.
  • Supports the overall success of Educational Outreach and Student Services by performing other duties as assigned and serving on university committees and workgroups.
Days and Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00AM-5:00PM. Requires availability on nights and weekends, as needed, for ASU programs, events, and critical incidents.
