Description
Position Summary:
The Database Administrator will play a pivotal role in ensuring the seamless operation, security, and optimization of our customers organizational database systems. The primary focus of this role is on Microsoft SQL Server, with additional opportunities to apply your expertise in MySQL, Oracle, and PostgreSQL. You will collaborate closely with our development and IT teams to design, implement, and maintain efficient database structures, contributing to the overall success of our technology initiatives.
The ideal candidate will bring a wealth of experience in database administration, a keen understanding of Microsoft SQL Server, and the flexibility to adapt to other database platforms as needed. The main responsibilities will encompass database performance tuning, security enforcement, backup and recovery planning, and proactive issue resolution. Other optional skills in alternative database systems will be leveraged to provide comprehensive support and expertise across various technologies.
Roles and Responsibilities/ Essential Functions:

  • Work with HBS Sales Solutions Consultants to identify and expand opportunities within HBS client environments.
  • Meet with customers to understand their current business processes and needs to provide consulting services and direction on how to build or grow their current data strategy.
  • Estimate development effort required to deliver data customer needs and requests.
  • Ability to work independently or as a team on project-based solutions for clients.
  • Work with teammates to continue to grow and mature data services and delivery options for HBS clients.
  • Based on experience, one may mentor other engineers in developing scalable, secure, high-performance BI and Data solutions.
  • Design, implement, and maintain database systems, primarily using Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Monitor and optimize database performance to ensure efficient and seamless operations.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve database-related issues in a timely manner.
  • Implement and enforce database security protocols to protect sensitive data.
  • Ensure compliance with industry regulations and best practices.
  • Develop and implement backup and recovery strategies to safeguard critical data.
  • Perform regular data backups and test recovery procedures.
  • Collaborate with developers to design and implement efficient database structures.
  • Optimize and tune SQL queries for improved performance.
  • Possess optional skills in managing databases such as MySQL, Oracle, and PostgreSQL.
  • Provide support for database systems beyond Microsoft SQL Server as needed.
  • Establish and maintain database monitoring systems to detect and address issues proactively.
  • Generate regular reports on database performance and usage.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation for database configurations, processes, and procedures.
  • Keep documentation up to date with any changes or enhancements.
  • For Fiscal 2024, a minimum of 1,298 hours billed per fiscal year prorated based on start date. These charge hour requirements will be balanced against professional development and on the job training. This goal is re-evaluated on an annual basis.

Required Skills, Education and/ or Certifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, or I.T. related discipline accepted.

Required Experience:
  • Proven expertise in designing, implementing, and maintaining Microsoft SQL Server databases.
  • Strong understanding of database architecture, normalization, and denormalization concepts.
  • Proficiency in identifying and resolving performance bottlenecks through query optimization and index tuning.
  • Experience in monitoring and fine-tuning database systems for optimal efficiency.
  • In-depth knowledge of database security best practices and the ability to implement robust security protocols.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements and experience ensuring compliance within database environments.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing effective backup and recovery strategies.
  • Proven ability to perform and validate database restores in various scenarios.
  • Strong scripting skills, preferably with T-SQL, PowerShell, or other relevant scripting languages.
  • Ability to automate routine database administration tasks to improve efficiency.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve database-related issues promptly.
  • Experience in conducting root cause analysis for database incidents.
  • Effective collaboration with development teams to design and implement database structures that align with application requirements.
  • Strong communication skills to convey complex technical concepts to cross-functional teams.
  • Thorough documentation skills, including the ability to create and maintain comprehensive documentation for database configurations, processes, and procedures.
  • Commitment to keeping documentation up to date with changes and improvements.
  • Proficient in setting up and maintaining database monitoring systems.
  • Ability to generate and analyze regular reports on database performance and usage.
  • Relevant certifications in Microsoft SQL Server or other database platforms are a plus.
  • Willingness to learn and apply skills to alternative database platforms, including MySQL, Oracle, and PostgreSQL.

Preferred Experience:
  • 1+ year in managing databases in SQL Server
  • Expertise in Professional Services or similar client facing roles
  • Experience in multiple industries (Education, Healthcare, Retail, Manufacturing) verticals
  • Familiarity with other database platforms such as AWS, MySQL, Oracle, and PostgreSQL.
  • Experience in database development and working with developers to optimize queries.
  • Experience in setting up and managing database replication for distributed environments.
  • Knowledge of different replication models and their application.
  • Understanding of data warehousing concepts and experience in managing large-scale data warehouses.
  • Knowledge of tools and practices for ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes.
  • Exposure to cloud-based database services, such as Azure SQL Database or Amazon RDS.
  • Ability to deploy and manage databases in a cloud environment.
  • Knowledge of high availability solutions such as clustering, mirroring, or AlwaysOn for Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Experience in implementing and managing database disaster recovery strategies.
