Salary:
This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $70,122. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.
Role Overview:
The Data Visualization Specialist collaborates with a cross-functional team to transform complex data into insightful and visually appealing dashboards, reports, and presentations. You will design and develop custom visualizations and communicate data insights effectively to stakeholders. You will also maintain existing dashboards for the agency and update them with new data as they become available.
Key outcomes include:
  • Work with cross-functional teams to understand data requirements and develop Data Visualization solutions to meet their needs
  • Design, develop, and implement visually appealing dashboards, reports, and presentations that effectively communicate insights from complex data, with a focus on education-related data
  • Collaborate with data analysts, data scientists, and other stakeholders to understand data sources, data models, and business requirements
  • Develop custom visualizations using industry-standard tools such as Power BI, or other Data Visualization software

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Data Visualization and be able to understand data needs. A background in education or experience with education data is a plus.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
  • Coordinate with key business stakeholders to understand their analytical and operational challenges;
  • Design, develop, and format polished Data Visualizations (reports and dashboards) to support generated user stories from stakeholders;
  • Prioritize requirements and create prototypes for end users;
  • Work closely with end users to gather requirements and translate them into effective/meaningful visual reporting tools;
  • Determine the structure, content, and quality of the data through examination of source systems and data samples;
  • Conduct data quality checks, as needed, to ensure the validity and cleanliness of agency datasets prior to their use in analysis and reporting;
  • Publish workbooks to appropriate QA, production, and public servers;
  • Provide maintenance and support for production products;
  • Document and communicate technical specifications to ensure that proper and optimized techniques, queries, and final deliverables are understood and incorporated into data and analytics processes;
  • Support a portfolio of data domains to identify and implement continuous ideas for visualizing data for self-service analytics
  • Use source code repositories for source code version control;
  • Present data in a fashion that is easy to understand with proper documentation and user testing for successful adoption;
  • Provide end-user education for interpretation of business data;
  • Test and evaluate upgrades to existing software;
  • Collaborate with other BI professionals and data engineers around data/table structures to optimize dashboards and other self-service needs;
  • Look for opportunities to improve current processes or find efficiencies by applying industry best practices;

What You'll Need for Success:
The ideal candidate in this role should minimally have either
  • a Bachelor's Degree with 3+ years of experience, or
  • at least 5+ years of experience applying the below, outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role.
  • Related certifications and coursework may be considered for education or experience.

Skills and competencies:
  • Experience manipulating very large datasets;
  • Experience in working with one or more BI platforms (ex: Tableau, Power BI);
  • Strong understanding of relational and dimensional databases and data warehousing structures, theories, principles, and practices;
  • Experience with geocoding and map visualizations;
  • Experience generating public-facing visualizations;
  • Experience in optimizing visualizations for web and mobile device platforms;
  • Effective communicator and problem solver;
  • Exceptional analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving abilities;
  • Visual and artistic creative skills;
  • Strong written/oral communication and presentation/interpersonal skills;
  • Advanced SQL coding and troubleshooting skills;
  • Experience with data modeling, database design, and query performance tuning and optimization;
  • Experience with database development and data manipulation using PL/SQL and T-SQL;
  • Strong understanding of relational and dimensional databases

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
