Department Specific Functions
The Datta laboratory focuses on: (1) understanding how tumor-intrinsic transcriptional programs orchestrate immune suppression in the pancreatic tumor microenvironment; (2) deciphering and targeting the dominant tolerogenic myeloid cell-derived signaling mechanisms that govern T-cell dysfunction and stromal inflammation in pancreatic cancer; (3) using single-cell technologies to investigate the lineage trajectories of tolerogenic myeloid cells and their spatial habitats in the pancreatic tumor microenvironment; and (4) developing novel nanoengineering and tissue engineering strategies to abolish tolerogenic signaling from neutrophilic myeloid-derived suppressor cells in order to mitigate stromal inflammation and invigorate antitumor immune responses in pancreatic cancer. Our work has been funded by the Miami Clinical and Translational Science Institute with an NIH KL2 award, Stanley Glaser Foundation, American College of Surgeons' Franklin H. Martin Research Fellowship, Association for Academic Surgery Joel J. Roslyn Faculty Award, Society for Surgical Oncology Young Investigator Award, and the Elsa U. Pardee Foundation. Our science is currently funded by the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network Career Development Award, a Sylvester Transdisciplinary Science Pilot, and Department of Defense Idea Development Award (pending Fall 2023) grants. Our laboratory has recently published manuscripts in Cancer Discovery, Gastroenterology, eLife, and Oncogene, among others.
  • Works with stakeholders throughout the organization, particularly our Shared Resources, to generate streamlined pipelines for single-cell technologies, such as scRNAseq, scATACseq, single-cell imaging mass cytometry, and scDNAseq. Analyzes and mines data from laboratory and public databases to drive hypothesis generation and validate signals from in vitro/in vivo experiments. Assesses the effectiveness and accuracy of new data sources and computational techniques. Develops custom data models and algorithms to apply to data sets. Utilizes predictive modeling to increase and optimize research productivity from local and public big datasets. Has wet lab experience in cancer biology and immunology to implement hypotheses generated from big data to test in in vitro/in vivo models. Coordinates with different functional teams and stakeholders across campus to generate meaningful collaborations, implement models, and monitor outcomes. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
