The Mission Systems Operations Contract (MSOC) at the Johnson Space Center is seeking a Data Comm Engineer with academic foundation, exposure to, and/or working knowledge of Data Comm systems and components, and passionate about increasing their experience and knowledge in these areas for both the NASA/JSC Mission Systems critical and non-critical systems. The selected applicant will also be involved in conducting impact analysis for any engineering modifications, installations, and maintenance of space mission systems in both the test environment and production environments, conduct systems analysis, engineering planning and modifications, as well as design. The applicant will work in a team environment, and must possess good interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written. Our ideal candidate will have a strong drive to apply and continually update his/her skill base, is team oriented and with good problem-solving skills.
Requirements
- Familiar with commonly used Data Communications principles, concepts, practices, and procedures
- Familiar with commonly used networking principles, concepts, practices, and procedures
- Understanding of serial and network Data Communications protocols and standards
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Self-motivated and willing to work independently seeking advice as necessary
- Hands-on approach to learning
- Able to pass a background check
Responsibilities
- Assist in the architectural design and development of technical products and systems, as well as the sustaining, and maintenance of engineering documentation (databases and drawings) and generation of instructions to change (install, modify, update) the various Data Comm systems
- Support the design, development, testing, verification, and deployment of Data Comm Systems
- Address and resolve technical issues as needed
- Translate NASA customer operations concepts and functional requirements into engineering design details.
- Conduct technical analysis of Data Comm products and systems
- Conduct engineering design evaluations
- Report on technical work progress, issues, impediments, etc.
- Support the integration of Data Comm hardware systems into the supported NASA environments
- Follow existing NASA and engineering instructions as well as pre-established guidelines
- Identify hardware components, develop parts lists, and generate material procurement requests for acquisition of equipment and materials.
- Be able to communicate effectively and coordinate with internal team members and external NASA customer
- Report to senior engineers, leads and platform engineering manager
- Participate in process improvements, as needed
- Comply with the MSOC contract and NASA/JSC/MSD direction, policies, and procedures
Education
BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline.
Desired Qualifications
- An understanding of Data Comm systems
- 5+ years or more of experience in Data Comm systems
- Good problem solving and analytical skills
- Strong communication skills inclusive of low-level technical details with peers and summary level to management
- Master's degree in electrical engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Science, or equivalent is a definite plus
- Demonstrated work experience to receive task assignments, work autonomously and provide periodic status to team members
- Demonstrated experience working system anomalies during mission-critical periods of operation through problem resolution
- Familiarity with IP-based Voice and Video system architectures
- Familiarity with Time Division Multiplexed (TDM) voice systems
- Familiarity with audio codecs (G.711, G.729)
- Familiarity with telephony system (Loop/Ground Start, SIP, Asterisk)
- Familiarity with telecommunications carrier interfaces (TDM, IP)
- Familiarity with mission audio recorder systems
- Active TS Security Clearance is a plus, but not required
